  • Purina Dentalife Dog Chews Review

    Purina Dentalife Dog Chews Review

I started using Purina Dentalife Dog Chews last year after my Amazon Fresh account recommended them during a routine shopping visit. As an evidence-based pro-veterinarian pet journalist, I don’t purchase or recommend dog products unless they have some legitimate science to back up their marketing claims.

See, I’m tired of being sold to. I know you are, too. I understand the conflict here, as I’m using this blog post to promote a product that I wholeheartedly believe in. Hear me out on this one.

Purina Dentalife caught my attention because of the price. I have big (ok, GIANT) dogs that can put away a dental chew like nobody’s business. Affordability matters and Dentalife is very reasonably priced.

I also understand how important clean teeth caring for our pet’s oral health is to our pets (seriously, check out this article from Cornell University about dog dental care).

So let’s chew this up. Are Purina Dentalife chews safe, effective, and affordable for our pets? I say yes, but let’s read more below!

    Purina Dentalife Dog Chews

These VOHC-approved dental chews have been clinically proven to reduce tartar buildup by 57%.

    Oh, and dogs love them.

Are Purina Dentalife Chews VOHC Approved?

YES! I will not purchase any oral care product for my dogs unless the VOHC approves it.

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is an organization that evaluates the dental health benefits of pet products, particularly dental treats, chews, and oral hygiene products like toothpaste and mouth rinses.

It was founded to help pet owners identify products that are effective in reducing the accumulation of dental plaque and tartar in dogs and cats. Products that meet the VOHC’s standards for efficacy in reducing plaque and tartar buildup receive the VOHC Seal of Acceptance.

This seal serves as an indication to pet owners that the product has undergone rigorous testing and has been shown to contribute to good oral health in pets when used as directed.

Do Dogs Like Purina Dentalife Chews?

My dogs love them and will jump through hoops to get their daily dental chew from me.

To be fair, my dogs will also eat bunny poop. So I find their tastes to be questionable!

Knowing this, I turned to Amazon to check out some reviews on Dentalife, to see if other pet owners had the same experience.

Here are a few quotes from Amazon & Chewy Reviews:

“My dog loves these things. If she doesn’t chew on these daily her breath is unbearable!
Nice size package for the money.”

“They seem to help with his tartar buildup and they both seem to love them they run right over to the cupboard where I have them.”

“Our dogs run straight to the counter for their DentalLife sticks as soon as they’re done eating breakfast.”

    Purina Dentalife Dog Chews

These VOHC-approved dental chews have been clinically proven to reduce tartar buildup by 57%.

    Oh, and dogs love them.

Do Purina Dentalife Dog Chews Work?

The VOHC seal of approval is a green flag for these chews, as that seal can only be obtained by companies that prove their product with rigorous trials.

In my own experience, yes, they do work. I was pleasantly surprised that even my gunky mouth dog (we all have THAT dog, am I right?) had clean teeth after just a few days of chewing on these.

The chewy texture scrapes their teeth as they bite into it. This helps to remove slime, buildup, and gunk around the gumline including damaging and unsightly tartar.

Like most pet owners, I’m not perfect. The truth is, I don’t always get around to brushing my dog’s teeth every single day (like we are supposed to).

I can say from personal experience that these chews not only help my dogs have fresh breath, but they work pretty well to remove gunk from their teeth and keep their mouths clean.

Of course, if your dog has serious dental problems, lots of build-up, and bad teeth, I recommend starting with a sedated cleaning with your veterinarian. No dental chew on the market is going to help that situation! However, these are phenomenal for maintaining good oral health once established.

Are Purina Dentalife Safe to Feed Dogs?

Purina Dentalife dog chews are made in the U.S.A. with carefully sourced ingredients. The proprietary shape and texture are effective at removing tartar from a dog’s teeth, and the chews are digestible (so unlike rawhide and bully sticks, you don’t have to worry about obstructions).

There is some chatter on social media about Purina products being full of heavy metals, toxins, and roadkill. This commentary is driven by a fringe group of “holistic” veterinarian influencers and pet owners who are anti-science, anti-vaccine, anti-veterinarian, and pro-conspiracy. You can read more about this nonsense HERE.

My dogs, and millions of others, enjoy Purina products (including Dentalife) daily and are positively thriving. They have clean teeth, too. Yay!

  • How to Teach Recall to a Stubborn Great Dane Dog

How to Teach Recall to a Stubborn Great Dane Dog

At Hello Danes, we are HUGE believers in teaching Great Danes how to come when called. This is an important skill that is necessary for their safety and our sanity! Recall is the ability to command a dog to return promptly upon hearing its name or a specific cue. If you are ready to teach recall to a stubborn Great Dane in your life, this is where it’s at.

Between the two of us, we have 5 Great Danes that regularly get together to play…off-leash. We can ask them to calmly wait while others walk by. They can noodle around and explore the forest or the water, and we know they will come when we ask them to.

Our dogs are not special or smarter or less stubborn than any other Great Dane! But they are well trained, and we are here to help you achieve the same.

    10

Why is Recall Important for Great Danes?

A reliable recall skill not only ensures the safety of the dog and those around it but also fosters a deeper connection between the owner and their Great Dane.

Here are some great reasons to train your dog to come when called, no matter what!

    1. Safety: One of the primary reasons for training a dog to come when called is to ensure their safety. Being able to call your dog back in potentially dangerous situations, such as traffic or around other animals, can prevent accidents and injuries.
    2. Off-Leash Freedom: A well-trained recall allows dogs to enjoy off-leash activities, providing them with more freedom during walks, playtime, and in secure, designated areas.
    3. Emergency Situations: In emergencies, a reliable recall can be a lifesaver. Whether it’s a sudden threat or a need to evacuate, being able to call your dog quickly and reliably is crucial.
    4. Social Interaction: A dog that comes when called is generally more socially adaptable. This is important for interactions with other dogs, people, and in various environments where you want your dog to be well-behaved and responsive.
    5. Compliance with Regulations: In many places, there are leash laws that mandate dogs to be under control in public spaces. A strong recall allows you to comply with these regulations, avoiding potential fines and ensuring a positive experience for others.
    6. Building Trust: Teaching your dog to come when called strengthens the bond between you and your pet. Trust is the foundation of a healthy relationship, and a reliable recall demonstrates your dog’s trust in your guidance.
    7. Ease of Veterinary Care: A dog that comes when called makes veterinary visits and routine care much easier. This cooperative behavior reduces stress for both the dog and the owner during medical examinations or treatments.
    8. Preventing Unwanted Behavior: A quick recall is an effective tool for preventing or interrupting undesirable behaviors, such as digging, chewing, or chasing after wildlife. It allows you to redirect your dog’s attention and reinforce positive behaviors.
    9. Enhanced Training Opportunities: Dogs that respond well to recall open up additional training opportunities. Whether it’s participating in agility courses, advanced obedience training, or simply enjoying more varied activities, a reliable recall is a prerequisite.
    10. Peace of Mind: Knowing that you can call your dog back in any situation provides peace of mind for dog owners. It allows for a more enjoyable and stress-free experience when spending time with your furry companion in various environments.

To put it simply, teaching your stubborn Great Dane to come when called is a valuable and necessary process. It’s worth the time you put into it!

5 Things You Need to Teach Coming When Called

We recommend the following items in your toolkit:

    5 3

Step 1: Build the Recall Foundation with Positive Reinforcement

The first step in teaching a stubborn dog to recall is establishing a solid foundation built on positive reinforcement.

Begin in a controlled environment with minimal distractions. Use your dog’s name or a specific recall cue, followed by a treat or praise when they come to you. Repeat this process!

“Fido, COME!” then offer a small treat. Do this randomly, all day long. Make it fun. Never lure your dog by showing them the treat! Always hide it until they respond to your recall cue.

For some dogs, you may have to start with them being only a foot away from you. That’s ok!

Consistency is key—reward every successful recall promptly. Positive reinforcement creates an association between coming when called and positive outcomes, making it more likely that your dog will repeat the behavior willingly.

Don’t make this mistake when training your stubborn dog to come:

Never, EVER scold your dog when they come to you! If your dog has a habit of blowing you off when you recall them, don’t punish them for it when you finally catch them.

If you find yourself correcting your pet and letting them know how unhappy you are that they weren’t listening, you are teaching the dog that coming back to you sucks. Be better than this.

Ready to get serious? Here are our recommended items for training stubborn dogs to recall!

    1

Step 2: Add Distractions & Fun Recall Games

As your dog becomes more comfortable with basic recall in your home and around your house, gradually introduce distractions to mimic real-life scenarios.

Start with the basics and increase the difficulty over time. Use your long leash and treats to start exploring new environments and bigger distances!

    Some examples might include:

    • Asking your dog to come to you from 5 feet away in a new location such as your front yard
    • Visiting a quiet park and practicing recall there
    • Going on a hike and asking your dog to recall to you from a short distance away

Never ask your pet to recall if you aren’t positive they will comply.

If you are unsure that your pet will respond, you’re asking too much for their current education level. It’s not that they are stubborn, it’s that you just haven’t built enough value yet around recalling in higher distraction environments. That’s ok, keep working on it!

    Fun Games that Teach Recall

Coming to you must be fun and rewarding! You must be more interesting and more engaging than any distraction in the environment. Here are some fun games that teach recall, to help build drive and enthusiasm in your stubborn dog!

    Use Toys and Play

Tug-of-war, fetch, or incorporating favorite toys can make the training process fun for your dog. When your dog comes, instead of a treat immediately chuck a ball or a tug at them and play!

Game #1 – Hide and Seek

Introducing a game of hide and seek into your dog’s training routine can be a playful and effective way to cultivate enthusiastic recall. Tuck yourself behind a wall or door and encourage your pet to find you. When they do, shower them with praise and treats.

As you progress, extend the hiding locations and increase the difficulty, encouraging your dog’s natural instincts to search and find. Hide and seek not only strengthens the recall behavior but also adds an element of joy to the training, fostering a strong connection between you and your canine companion.

Game #2 – Hold Them Back

For this game, you need a friend to hold your dog and prevent them from coming to you.

While they hold your pet back, you RUN away. Use a squeaking toy to make sounds, wave your arms, act silly, and roll on the ground. Have FUN!

Your dog will be ANTSY to get to you. Take advantage of this and say “Fido, COME!”. Your friend can release your dog on this cue, and they will bolt to you. Reward this behavior!

    2

Step 3: Modern E-Collar Training for Teaching Recall

At some point, you’ll be ready to ditch the long leash. But is that truly the safest and most responsible thing to do?

Let’s dig into what I call the replacement for the long leash.

This final recall trick is how we safely and confidently can have 5 Great Danes off leash!

It’s time we talk about modern E-Collar training.

All leashes and collars provide tactile feedback to your pet. This feedback is a communication to them. E-collars work the same way (we’re not talking about cheap shock collars here. Those are different). Gentle, tactile sensations in the form of muscle stimulation can be used to effectively replace the sensation of leash tension from getting to the end of a long leash.

E-Collar training can start once the dog has a solid foundation of recall. This means that you’ve followed the steps above, your dog knows what COME means, and can recall to you from short distances among reasonable distractions.

I will cover purchasing the right E-collar below. Let’s start with how to train with an E-collar first!

How to Condition a Dog to an E-Collar

Larry Krohn is a dog trainer known for his positive reinforcement-based approach, including e-collar training. Keep in mind that using an e-collar requires careful consideration and should be approached with a commitment to ethical and humane training practices. Below is a step-by-step guide based on a positive reinforcement approach inspired by Larry Krohn’s methods:

Step 1: Introduce the E-Collar as a Neutral Object Allow your dog to become familiar with the e-collar as a neutral object. Let them sniff and inspect it while associating this experience with positive reinforcement, such as treats or playtime. This helps create a positive association with seeing and wearing the e-collar.

Step 2: Find your Dog’s Working Level To find the working level, start by placing the e-collar on your dog and selecting the lowest intensity setting. Observe your dog’s reaction, looking for subtle signs like a twitch of the ear or a change in expression. Gradually increase the intensity until you notice a noticeable response, such as a slight head movement or acknowledgment of the collar. The working level is the lowest setting where you see a clear but mild reaction. It’s essential to conduct this process in a calm environment, free from distractions, and always prioritize your dog’s comfort and well-being.

Step 3: Gradual Introduction of Low-Level Stimulation Once your dog is comfortable with the collar’s sensation at the lowest level they notice, start pairing the sensation with treats. Most dogs learn very quickly that the sensation = treats. This sensation can ultimately replace the word “COME”!

Step 4: Practice Recall in Controlled Environments Initiate recall training in controlled environments with minimal distractions. Use the collar’s stimulation feature when giving the recall command, rewarding your dog for a prompt and positive response. Apply stimulation, say COME, and immediately remove the stimulation when your dog turns to run towards you. Gradually increase the level of distraction as your dog becomes more proficient.

Step 5: Gradual Exposure to Different Environments Expand recall training to different environments, exposing your dog to varying levels of distractions. This helps generalize the recall behavior across diverse settings. Ensure the e-collar is used as a tool to reinforce positive behaviors rather than as a punishment.

Step 6: Monitor and Adjust as Needed Continuously observe your dog’s reactions and adjust the e-collar settings accordingly. If your dog shows signs of stress or discomfort, reassess the training approach, and seek professional guidance if necessary.

Step 7: Utilize Continuous and Escalating Stimulation as Needed to Communicate from Afar Once your dog understands that stimulation = come to you, you can utilize slightly higher levels of stimulation and increasing pressure to reinforce the behavior in high distraction areas. For example, if your dog is chasing a squirrel or about to run into the road, you can quickly implement a higher level of communication from the collar.

Step 8: Seek Professional Guidance if Needed If you’re unsure about any aspect of e-collar training or if you encounter challenges, consider seeking guidance from a professional dog trainer experienced in positive reinforcement methods with e-collar use.

Remember, the goal is to create a positive association between the e-collar and desired behaviors, ensuring a reliable recall without causing stress or fear for your dog.

The Best E-Collars for Stubborn Dogs

When it comes to training stubborn dogs, selecting the right e-collar can make a significant difference in the training experience. We never, ever recommend purchasing cheap shock collars!

The best e-collars for stubborn dogs are those that offer adjustable stimulation levels, ensuring a tailored approach to the individual dog’s sensitivity. Models with a wide range of settings provide flexibility, allowing trainers to find the ideal intensity that effectively communicates without causing distress.

Additionally, e-collars with features like vibration or tone options offer alternatives to stimulation, providing a more versatile training experience.

Reputable brands like SportDOG, Garmin, and E-Collar Technologies are often recommended for their reliability, durability, and commitment to ethical training practices.

    Joint Support for Great Danes

All three of my dogs were seen by their veterinarian this week for their annual checkup. One of my dogs is 7 years old, and so the topic of joint support for Great Danes and other dogs was brought up. We had a wonderful discussion that involved several key points I just HAD to bring to the blog and share!

To put this simply, there is a good chance you are spending big money on joint support that is not helping your pet. Not all joint support options are created equal!

So if you are looking for the best joint support for your dog, start here.

    • Why some joint supplements are inferior
    • How to choose supplements that are safe and effective
    • Veterinary recommended joint support for big dogs
    • Types of joint supplements to choose from
    • Our recommendations

Author’s Note: we talk a LOT about Great Danes and other big dogs on our blog, however, this topic is helpful for all dog owners!

Veterinarian Information about Joint Support for Great Danes

My veterinarian is actually a husband + wife team. They are wonderful and we’ve been seeing (and trusting) them for years. Dr. K has been seeing patients in a clinical setting for decades, and mentioned that he’s been involved with 4 different practices over his career.

He’s seen some things, in other words.

He told me a story about how at one practice, there was no standard protocol for recommending joint support. Each veterinarian would basically throw brand names on the table based on the client’s budget or what they were already using. With time, there became a glaring discrepancy between some dogs.

In the process of watching this play out for many years, he found that some joint supplements were effective, and some weren’t. The key difference is NOTABLE. Check this out:

Consistently, he saw (and still sees) notable improvements in dogs fed joint supplements backed by legitimate trials and research, especially when compared to dogs fed other brands.

He said in many cases, switching to a better brand of joint support can even get some dogs off of Rimadyl and other anti-inflammatory drugs.

One may be inclined to think that all joint support is backed by research and science, but the unfortunate truth here is that many are NOT. You can’t just go by what the bag tells you, either.

Slick marketing doesn’t mean that a company has actually studied the product they are selling.

    Read on, friends.

Not All Pet Supplements are Created Equal

Here are some interesting facts about the pet supplement industry:

    a. Most joint support options are NOT supported by clinical trials.

    b. The supplement industry is largely unregulated, so when you choose brands with no clinical backing, you’re basically stabbing in the dark when it comes to efficacy, bioavailability, and even safety.

This lack of oversight when it comes to the manufacture of pet supplements means that the market is flooded with a myriad of products, varying widely in quality and efficacy.

The absence of standardized guidelines for formulation and testing raises concerns about the consistency and safety of these supplements. While there are some ‘rules’ about making claims on the label, such guidelines are pretty easy to skirt around with good marketing. As pet owners, we are faced with tough decisions!

The brutal truth here is that it’s much less expensive for a company to invest in good marketing and pretty packages than it is for them to invest in dedicated research and stringent quality control.

Consequently, there is a risk of mislabeling, inaccurate dosage information, and even the inclusion of potentially harmful ingredients.

    3 1

How to Choose the Best Joint Support for Great Danes

After our conversation today, I agree with my veterinarian whole-heartedly!

When it comes to food, supplements, and joint support…are we choosing brands backed by actual clinical research and evidence? Or are we choosing brands because they have good marketing and pretty packages?

This information sent me down a huge rabbit hole of course, but not before I asked him what he felt the best joint support for Great Danes was.

He said overwhelmingly, the ONLY truly safe, effective option where you get your money’s worth is Nutramax Labs.

You’ve probably heard of them, and may even be feeding their supplements! Nutramax makes Cosequin and Dasuquin products.

Thankfully, these products are widely available from Chewy, Amazon, and even Costco! For dogs with mobility issues, Dasuquin Advanced has some additional support to minimize damage to cartilage and is available only from the veterinarian.

    16

Dog Joint Support with Clinical Trials

After this discussion with my veterinarian, I had to look into this.

All of us should be alarmed that so many companies are selling us supplements with no actual science behind them! As a matter of fact, I have found that many supplements on the market are packed by factories that make similar products for any brand with enough money to develop a decent marketing plan.

Anybody can put glucosamine into a bottle and say it’s good for our pets. That doesn’t mean it actually is.

I looked into the research done by Nutramax labs and found some incredible things.

For starters, they own and operate their own research and manufacturing facilities. This means that they have control over every step of the process.

They also published this PDF which outlines just some of the intensive research done into their ingredients and the efficacy of their product.

    Cosequin Studies by Nutramax Labs

We should expect this same dedication to our pets health with ALL supplements and food choices we make.

    7 1

    Ingredients in Cosequin & Dasuquin

Of course, one may be inclined to read the ingredients in Cosequin and Dasuquin and believe that a more natural or holistic option would be a better choice.

You may be alarmed by the inclusion of scary words such as “natural flavors” and “magnesium stearate”.

Magnesium Stearate is commonly used in vitamins to keep ingredients or tablets from sticking together. It is considered a safe ingredient, especially when given at the extremely low dose offered in joint supplements.

Natural flavors are not harmful. A lot of fear about ingredients in human and pet food comes from toxic diet culture (that’s an interesting rabbit hole if you are every interested in digging into it!).

Make sure that the sources you gain such information from are referencing legitimate science. Pseudoscience and alarmism sells, unfortunately.

The proven, researched active ingredients in Cosequin and Dasuquin products may include:

    Glucosamine Hydrochloride

    Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate

    Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

    Manganese (Manganese Ascorbate)

    Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU) Powder

    Green Tea Extract

Each product is slightly different. Dasuquin is the more advanced form of Cosequin and includes additional support (usually for cartilage).

    12

Don’t Waste Your Money on Snake Oil

Holistic influencers like Dr. Karen Becker and Dr. Judy Morgan have made their millions selling untested, unproven supplements and the concept that ‘natural’ is healthier.

Make no mistake. Their online stores are filled with generic products that are co-packed in big factories. There is very little science, research, or trials behind these supplements.

The careful use of words and packaging that appears homemade lead buyers to believe that these choices are wholesome, organic, and better quality.

It’s snake oil and the solid majority of practicing veterinarians will not recommend their products.

For more information on social media myths and marketing in the pet industry, check out our popular new post on this topic.

How to Find Reputable Pet Food & Supplement Brands

The easiest way to find product recommendations that are backed by research and evidence is to talk to your veterinarian.

They see 100’s of pets every month and know what works, consistently!

You may be inclined to believe that your veterinarian is recommending products because of kickbacks, but that is a dangerous myth. Most of the people who promote that wildly incorrect idea aren’t qualified at all, and may even be practicing veterinary medicine without a license.

Whether we like it or not, a clinically researched food or joint support brand is going to be infinitely safer and healthier for our pets than one that only sounds more ‘wholesome’ on paper.

Veterinarians recommend dog food brands and products that meet their personal standards for safety, efficacy, science, and quality control.

    3

The Best Joint Support for Great Danes

After deep diving into this topic myself, I will now only use and recommend the same joint support that my experienced and highly qualified veterinarian does.

The following options are safe, healthy, and effective for Great Danes and other big dogs:

What is the Difference Between Cosequin & Dasuquin

I used to be VERY confused about this myself, so here is the clarification:

Cosequin primarily contains glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, key components that support joint health by promoting cartilage development and reducing inflammation.

Dasuquin, often considered a more advanced version, incorporates the same foundational ingredients but adds ASU (avocado/soybean unsaponifiables), which is believed to further support joint function and help maintain cartilage.

This addition is thought to provide enhanced anti-inflammatory effects, potentially making Dasuquin a more comprehensive solution for dogs with existing joint issues.

While both supplements aim to improve joint mobility and alleviate discomfort, the inclusion of ASU in Dasuquin represents a notable distinction between the two. Pet owners should consider their dog’s specific needs, the severity of joint problems, and consult with a veterinarian to determine which supplement to purchase.

    Furbo 360 Dog Camera Review

Today I’m giving my unbiased Furbo 360 dog camera review, but first, a personal story.

Ihave a Great Dane with a bit of separation anxiety, and was kind of at my wits end. Everytime I left the house, he was howling. How did I know about this? My NEIGHBORS had to tell me. How embarrassing.

In a state of panic (after hearing that a petsitter had left him alone for 8 hours and he cried the whole time) I purchased the Furbo 360 Dog Camera on Amazon.

Having now used it for 2 months, I feel that I can create an honest Furbo review for you! There are some pros and cons to the Furbo, but overall, YES this is a great product. Let’s dig into the specifics.

    Furbo 360 dog camera review

Furbo 360 Dog Camera Review Summary

Here is a short list of the pros and cons of the Furbo 360 camera for separation anxiety.

    PROS

    • 360 rotation. This camera spins all the way around and WILL track your pets movement for you!
    • Robust app; the app tracks movement, provides you with alerts, and allows you to see your pet anytime you want
    • Cloud: view activity from the whole day
    • Activity labels: the app knows what your pet is doing (barking, chewing, running, crying, etc.) and labels the activity
    • Pet selfies! If your pet approaches the camera, it sends you adorable photos.
    • Treat tossing; you can use the app to throw treats at your pet anytime you want, even if you are miles away!
    • Good camera quality; I never feel that the resolution is poor
    • The pets know it gives them treats, so they love it

    CONS

    • Sometimes the treats get stuck and the tossing function jams up (more on this below, you have to pick the right kind of treats for the Furbo!)
    • A curious or tenacious pet could easily open it and take all of the treats out
    • The microphone function (talk to your pet 2-way audio) is a bit noisy and doesn’t always sound nice
    • Monthly fee (you have to pay to use the app, which is what makes the Furbo functional)

As you can see, my CONS list for the Furbo 360 Dog Camera is much shorter.

Does the Furbo 360 Help With Separation Anxiety?

Remember how I told you about my howling Great Dane? I know my neighbors were not appreciative at all…and I hated knowing that he was in distress.

I can say that the Furbo 360 DOES help with separation anxiety for two reasons:

    • The treat tossing function is pretty helpful for redirecting a dog that may be in distress (it whistles before it chucks the treat, so the dog learns to make that association). Pro tip be careful not to reward distressed behavior with treats! Instead, wait for the moment your pup settles then trigger the treat release.
    • Being able to see my dog on the Furbo gives me valuable insight into not only his triggers, but how our habits affected him when we were away.

Separation anxiety is a complex behavior that is rooted in insecurity. Even the most confident dogs can whine, cry, pace, and chew when their owner isn’t home.

So while the Furbo dog camera does help with separation anxiety, it’s just one (VERY helpful) piece of the puzzle.

Can I use the Furbo Dog Camera without the App?

Even if you could, I have to tell you that the app is WELL worth it.

Here are some of my favorite features of the Furbo Camera App:

    • Real time notifications of behaviors, which are labelled and include crying, barking, continuous barking, chewing, running, and more
    • Live monitoring at any time, with full control of camera rotation so you can find your dog in the room
    • Did I mention pet selfies? These are automatically sent to you anytime your dog approaches the camera
    • Treat tossing (you cannot do this without the app, and it’s a big thing that sets the Furbo apart from other dog monitoring cameras
    • Home emergency alert; the camera will notify you if there appears to be an emergency of any kind, including smoke
    • Human alert; the app lets you know if a human is in the room. This can be helpful for monitoring petsitter activity, or activity of bad people who don’t belong in your home!

To be honest, I have no clue if you can even try to use the Furbo without the app subscription. From what I’ve seen online, it’s actually cheaper to buy the camera if you commit to the app anyways. That’s a win-win in my book!

    Does Furbo Treat Tossing Work?

I love watching my dogs on camera when I use the treat tossing function. It’s HILARIOUS. The dogs hear the whistle and come running. I can trigger the Furbo to throw a treat anytime, anywhere I am in the world that my cell phone has internet, too!

It takes a few seconds from the time the Furbo makes a whistle sound until the treat actually launches from the device. The dogs have learned that’s how it works and they often sit with their head tilted staring at it.

To say I’ve had many, MANY laughs watching my dogs on this camera is an understatement! Sometimes if they want a treat they walk up and stare at it with hope. The camera tracks this movement and sends me a selfie, which is always adorable.

The treat tosser can get jammed if you use the wrong kind of treats! I made this mistake at first and used a softer, larger treat. It did not damage the machine but I had to do some creative work to get them out.

Furbo recommends small, hard treats like THESE from Plato

    Furbo Review

    Is the Furbo Always Recording?

The Furbo is always ready to pick up on activity, but it is not always recording.

If you are home, you can turn off the tracking. You can even set a schedule (for example, the Furbo will automatically turn on and start tracking when you leave for work).

I’m usually too lazy to go into the app to turn off tracking and motion sensing when we are home, so ours is on all of the time. It regularly lets me know if my dogs are barking, which is funny because I’m often in the same room.

The app only stores videos for 24 hours. After that, they are removed from both the app AND the cloud, which gives me peace of mind when it comes to data security of videos in my home.

    Is Furbo Worth It?

There are a million pet camera options out there, and to be honest the only two that I have experience with are the Ring Camera System and the Furbo.

The Ring doesn’t rotate, doesn’t track movement, and doesn’t toss treats.

So in my book, the Furbo wins hands down.

As to the other treat chucking dog cameras on the market? I have no idea. Amazon is overloaded with choices, many of them cheaper. To that, I say this: app development and security (of videos taken in the home and stored on the cloud) are not cheap. Bad apps ruin good products all the time, and I personally would not take my chances on a budget knockoff version of something like this.

We know the Furbo app is secure and it works beautifully. Having now used the Furbo 360 in my home for a few months, I can say with confidence that it is a well made product that just…WORKS.

I’ve never had problems with the connection, the camera, or the treat tossing function (ok, except when I was an idiot and put soft treats in there). The wooden lid is a nice feature that helps the device blend in with home decor.

  • Great Dane Sized Life Jackets

    Great Dane Sized Life Jackets

Are you ready to get on the water with your Great Dane? Finding Great Dane sized life jackets is tricky, so we did the work for you. We’re ranking and rating our favorites so that you and your giant dog can play at the lake or in the ocean all summer long!

In addition to sharing our favorite Great Dane sized life jackets, I’m going to cover:

    • When and why Great Danes should wear a life jacket
    • How to make sure the life jacket you choose for your Great Dane actually fits properly
    • The best places to play in the water with your Great Dane
    • How to avoid toxic and dangerous summer water (blue-green algae, ick!)

Before using any life jacket, we recommend calling the manufacturer before use; even if the chest circumference is ok, some dogs greatly exceed the weight limit. It’s important that owners are aware of the danger that can pose.

Believe it or not, many Great Danes actually love the water, and some even swim! Others enjoy boating and paddle boards, too.

Author’s note: it is important to monitor your dogs activity in and around water. Your dogs safety rests in your hands whether they have a lifejacket on or not.

    8

The Best Lifejackets for Great Danes

A good lifejacket for your dog should be:

    • Affordable
    • Well-made
    • Adjustable
    • GIANT!

Dog life jackets come in a range of sizes and are most widely available for medium-average sized dogs. They also come in a range of different qualities.

Every lifejacket offers different floatation ability, too. Some life jackets are better suited to dogs that are strong, athletic swimmers.

Less expensive options are perfect for Great Dane owners who won’t be using the jacket often, as the lower quality fabrics and stitching may reduce the useful lifespan of the product.

It’s important to note as well that cheaper lifejackets also won’t have as nice of a fit; in general they tend to be fairly boxy and utilitarian vs. athletic and comfortable to wear. For very active and athletic dogs who will be in the water or boating often, we recommend spending a little bit more.

    4 1

Why the Color of your Dog’s Lifejacket Matters

Make sure to choose BRIGHT colors! Remember that blue and green tones can get lost in the water, so if your dog is struggling or runs off, it’s less likely you’ll be able to see them.

We recommend choosing bright or neon colors such as orange, pink, lime, coral, and yellow.

Camo colors are best suited for highly trained retriever type hunting dogs, and shouldn’t be used as a fashion statement. Because camouflage is designed to make it harder (not easier) to find and see your dog, it’s not a very practical or safe choice for your average pet Dane.

Best Inexpensive Option: Yoyaker Dog Life Jacket

The Yoyaker Dog Life Jacket is a good option for Dane owners who aren’t in the water often. It is unlikely to hold up well to repeated use, but for a day in the sun? Start here! We don’t recommend a cheap life jacket like this for active dogs that will be in the water often.

This affordable choice comes in a range of colors and is one of the larger options we found! It is adjustable up to 48.5″ around the chest. (For perspective, my average sized intact male Great Dane has a chest circumference of 38″).

This is not a lifejacket with a very athletic fit, so on hot days it will be even more important to monitor your dogs body temperature and comfort.

    5

Best Athletic Life Jackets for Great Danes

An athletic style life jacket will be more suitable for dogs who are in the water often! These are good for all but especially great for Danes who are already fairly confident in and around water. Most athletic life jackets come with added features such as better fit, neoprene, sturdy buckles, and breathable mesh panels.

The Outward Hound Standley is a solid athletic life jacket for your Great Dane. It offers quality fabrics, bright lime green color, a mesh tummy panel, a leash attachment point, and a double handle system for lifting (if needed). The XL size fits up to a 44″ chest.

This was designed to drain water quickly away from your dogs fur under the jacket, which can help keep your pup comfortable! You can find the Outward Hound Standley Sport Jacket on Chewy HERE or on Amazon HERE.

EZY Dog Doggy Flotation Life Vest
    61KENa9hSbL. AC SL1125 1

This premium sport jacket is built for athletic dogs who don’t like having a lot of material around their tummies. It was engineered to provide above-average floatation and is a popular lifejacket for people who own large breed dogs! The XL size fits Great Danes with up to a 48″ chest circumference.

It comes in red or yellow and offers a leash attachment point, neoprene straps, heavy-duty stitching, and solid quick-release buckles. You can purchase the EZY Dog Doggy Flotation Life Vest on Chewy HERE, or on Amazon HERE.

The Kurgo Surg N’ Turk Life Jacket was designed for all-day wear (in particular, dogs that boat!). If you like to take your Great Dane fishing, this lifejacket is for you. It’s also one of the most stylish options!

Solid construction, quality fabrics, reflective piping, a leash attachment point, and neoprene are just some of the features of this popular life jacket. The XL can be adjusted to fit up to a 45″ chest.

    6

Best Pet Store Life Jacket for Great Danes

Of course, it’s really nice if we can get a lifejacket for our dogs locally and make sure it fits before purchase. Some pet stores carry lifejackets (typically, it’s seasonal) and you can go in with your dog to test it out.

For that, we highly recommend visiting Petsmart and checkout out the Outward Hound Dawson swim jacket. This version brings athletics to good floatation and comfort and can be adjusted to fit up to a 44″ chest.

If you cannot find it in your local Petsmart store, you can find it on Chewy HERE or on Amazon HERE.

    2

Best Overall Life Jacket for Great Danes

There is one top choice that is wildly popular among dog owners and organizations that support water sports and boating.

The Ruffwear Float Coat is one of the most well-designed and highly rated floatation devices for dogs!

Unlike other life jackets, the buckles are mostly hidden. This greatly reduces the risk that your dog become caught on something while in the water. The Ruffwear Float Coat is well-made, comes in beautiful colors, and will fit a dog with a chest circumference of up to 42″.

How to Make Sure a LifeJacket Fits a Dog

Once you’ve found a life jacket for your dog that you love, it’s important to make sure that the fit is correct.

If you are at the tail end of the straps and the jacket is snug, find a bigger jacket.

If you cinch the straps all the way down and the jacket is loose, go down a size.

An ill-fitting life jack is dangerous; it is important that the jacket fits nicely on your dogs body, is comfortable for them to wear, and doesn’t ride up if they are floating in the water. Go for a snug but comfortable fit (don’t cut off circulation, please).

We recommend checking buckles and fit often, and adjusting as needed throughout the day. At no point should the jacket be so loose that it wiggles around as the dog moves; this can cause rubbing or chafing and will not support your dog in the water, either.

    9

    Do Great Danes Like Water?

    Yes!

Many Great Danes actually love the water, choosing to splash, splay, and even swim in it.

In general, positive exposure to water in puppyhood goes a long ways towards building confidence in lakes and oceans. Something as simple as a small kiddle pool in your backyard can be used to help your puppy develop an early love for having their paws and fur wet!

Great Dane sized Kiddie Pool, see it on Amazon HERE

(If you put a small pool in your backyard, please supervise your dogs and kids!)

You might enjoy this paddleboarding Great Dane on Tik Tok, or watch Great Danes participate in the fun and exciting sport of dock diving!

How to Keep Your Great Dane Safe in the Water

Spending the day at the lake or the ocean should be fun and safe, not stressful and dangerous!

If your dog is new to swimming, stay by their side and be encouraging!

For pet owners who want to take their Great Dane paddle boarding or on a boat, a little advanced preparation is recommended!

Please check the weight limits if your paddleboard, boat, or kayak before loading yourself, your Dane, and all your gear on board.

    • Introduce the watercraft early! Ideally, your dog will have interacted with these things as a puppy. If not, that’s ok, it’s never too late!
    • For dogs of all ages, you can put your personal watercraft (paddle board, etc.) on the lawn and play games getting on and off. Make this a positive experience and then repeat it again on the shore before going on the water.
    • For large boats, the same thing applies! Introduce getting on and off, and make it a positive experience.
    • Once you are on the water, make sure your dog is in their life jacket and ideally off-leash with a modern sport e-collar (long lines can be dangerous in this situation, but check your local leash laws as well, and NEVER let a dog off leash that doesn’t have perfect recall)
    • Take it easy and have fun! If your dog is shaking, panting, drooling, or panicking, it’s not a safe activity.

Paddle boarding with a dog or spending the day on the lake in a boat is a fun activity, but do not do it if your dog really doesn’t like it!

I participate in water sports with my dogs and it makes me so sad to see how many dogs on the water are flat out terrified to be there. Many dog owners seem oblivious to it, unfortunately. Cue into your dogs body language; it’s ok to encourage them to face their fears a little bit, but if they are tense or freaking out? It’s time for a change in plans.

    12

Water Ingestion & Inhalation in Dogs Swimming

Another danger to watch out for in the water is excess consumption or inhalation of water, dirt, and mud.

Not only can your dog pick up parasites this way, but they are at risk of a belly ache or worse, getting water in their lungs.

Inhaling water is dangerous to your dog and it can result from gulping, guzzling, or struggling in the water in some way. If your dog has any kind of near drowning event, we recommend seeing a veterinarian ASAP.

Near drowning can happen to even the strongest of swimmers! In the ocean, the current can easily sweep them away. Some dogs don’t realize their limit and end up to far out in the water but become too tired to swim back.

Just like humans, a dog that is struggling in the water may appear to be ‘climbing a ladder’. A dog in this situation needs immediate rescue and help, even if they are wearing a lifejacket!

Monitor your dogs activity in and around the water, and make sure they are not gulping, guzzling, or inhaling too much.

    7

    Blue-Green Algae: Dangerous Water

During warm summer months, blue green algae blooms on stagnant lakes and ponds.

Blue-green algae is extremely toxic and kills many dogs each year after they spend an afternoon swimming.

Symptoms of blue-green algae exposure in dogs include:

    • Panting
    • Drooling
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Seizures
    • Respiratory Distress
    • Acting disoriented or wobbly

These symptoms or any known exposure to toxic algae in the water require immediate veterinary care. Left untreated, many dogs experience liver failure and death quickly.

The unfortunate thing about blue-green algae is that at times, it may not be visible. Spores from a nearby (visible) bloom can travel into clean waters. Thankfully, the worst waters typically have active and visible blue-green blooms that warn you to stay away.

It is very important when taking your dog swimming during the summer that you only engage in known safe waters and waters that are regularly tested for algae by your local wildlife and conservation officials. Never swim or engage in water activities where you see an active bloom nearby, and monitor reports from your States park systems and other dog owners.

Here is an exceptional article on how to spot toxic blooms. It shows photos so you can see the difference between a very typical non-toxic green algae and plants, and the dangerous blue-green film and signs of dangerous water (including smells) to watch for.

Not only is blue-green algae a danger, but there are all kinds of parasites that want to feed off your pet. They are easily picked up in wooded natural areas and near water, so learn how to protect your pet from parasites HERE.

    3 2

    Off-Leash Training for Great Danes

I mentioned this above, but it’s important to remember that long lines can be dangerous for dogs while they are swimming or trying to play and run freely.

However, being off-leash is dangerous (and in some places illegal) if your dog is not both well trained AND has a backup device such as a modern e-collar.

Any Great Dane that is out in public near other people or dogs needs to be well trained, especially if they are to be off-leash.

We recommend e-collar training, which is a modern, gentle way to replace the long leash and give your dog more freedom.

Proper e-collar training starts with a lot of positive reinforcement and requires that you purchase a quality electric dog collar, not a cheap shock collar from Amazon. Shock collars are not appropriate for Great Danes and are considered inhumane.

E-Collars don’t use shock, they use muscle stimulation (a tactile sensation like touch) which, with training, your dog learns to associate with certain behaviors. This allows you to communicate from afar and keep your dog safe in the water, too.

“As a veterinarian, acupuncturist and animal lover, I was shocked when I couldn’t find pet supplements with all of the qualities that I demanded for my patients. I also hated to see people waste their money on ineffective supplements that weren’t helping their pets! High-quality ingredients, correct dosages, no fillers and a combination of Eastern and Western medicines—was that too much to ask? I decided it wasn’t, which is why I partnered with my friend Emily to create Fera Pet Organics. We are driven by our devotion to you and your pets. Join us as we set the new standard for pet supplements.”

Tips for managing stress and anxiety in dogs beyond supplements

In addition to using supplements like Fera Pet Calming Support, there are several other tips and strategies that can help manage stress and anxiety in dogs:

    1. Regular exercise: Dogs need regular exercise to help burn off excess energy and reduce stress levels. Regular exercise can also help improve their mood and overall well-being.
    2. A consistent routine: Dogs thrive on routine, and having a consistent schedule can help reduce their stress and anxiety levels. Try to feed your dog at the same time each day, take them for walks at the same time, and establish a consistent bedtime routine.
    3. Crate training: Crate training can provide a safe and secure space for your dog to retreat to when they’re feeling stressed or anxious. Be sure to make the crate a comfortable and positive space for your dog to help encourage them to use it.
    4. Calming music or aromatherapy: Playing calming music or using aromatherapy can help create a relaxing environment for your dog. Lavender, chamomile, and vanilla scents are known for their calming properties.
    5. Behavior modification: In some cases, working with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist may be necessary to address underlying behavioral issues that may be contributing to your dog’s stress and anxiety.

Remember, every dog is different, and what works for one dog may not work for another. It’s important to be patient and consistent with your efforts to manage your dog’s stress and anxiety levels, and to consult with your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for guidance and support.

Bissell Bark Bath Review for Great Danes

I recently splurged on a Bissell Bark Bath for my Great Danes and literally RAN to the blog to tell you about it. If you are considering options for bathing your Great Dane, this Bark Bath review is a must-read.

When a Great Dane is muddy and dirty, you know it! Giant muddy paws and 130lbs of dirty fur on your couch are a sign that it’s time for a bath!

I’m a big fan of letting my Danes play in the mud and run around outside; but it comes with the added headache of keeping my house clean, too. I purchased the Bark Bath by Bissell for two reasons:

    • I wanted to easily remove irritants such as pollen, sand, and dirt that were causing my male Dane to itch
    • Our newly renovated shower doesn’t have enough water pressure to get my dogs clean (unfortunately)

Does the Bissell Bark Bath work to get a dog clean? Are dogs afraid of their Bark Bath? Let’s dig in.

    Bissell Bark Bath Review

    What is a Bark Bath?

This one is a little crazy, but hear me out.

The Bissell Bark Bath is essentially an upholstery cleaner for your dog.

I’m not kidding. This thing looks like a carpet shampooer and acts like one, too.

At first, I thought “this has GOT to be a joke, right?”.

No, it’s not a joke. Bissell went there. They literally made a device that shampoos your dog like they are a piece of furniture. As a matter of fact, they’ve even included an attachment so that you CAN shampoo your actual furniture, too.

I know what you are thinking though. There is NO way this could possibly work! Dogs will be afraid of the Bark Bath anyways, right? How does a Bark Bath even get the dog clean?

Are Dogs Afraid of the Bark Bath?

Here is my honest experience with this.

At first, my dogs were cautious. Within minutes, all three of them actually seemed to enjoy it.

If your dog likes being brushed (I use a Sleek EZ) or is used to being brushed, the Bark Bath will be no trouble at all for your dog.

This really speaks to the importance of good early socialization for Great Dane puppies!

Bissell includes a beautiful, well-thought-out training guide for acclimating dogs that are not as amenable to the process of being cleaned with a Bark Bath. This guide uses solid, modern behavioral training practices and I was super impressed with the content!

Here is my mantle boy Figaro getting bathed after spending an afternoon running in a VERY muddy field. It’s loud only because my phone was next to the machine during filming – in an ambient room it doesn’t sound this noisy.

Notice how I have him on a towel, and the water/mess is minimal.

    Is the Bark Bath Loud?

Bissell includes a thick microfiber mat to put the machine on. This dampens the sound which is not super loud at all. The machine resonates at a deeper tone, so there is no aversive high pitched whine. If anything, the deeper sound of the machine is soothing.

They also made the cord and hose super long so that you can place the machine several feet away from your dog. In theory, if you had a noise-phobic pet, you could absolutely put the device in another room and bath your dog around the corner.

    IMG 0321 2

What Does the Bark Bath Come With?

The box includes the Bark Bath machine itself, but also a huge tray of tools for all different coat types from short to long.

It also includes an attachment which can be used to spot clean carpets and upholstery, which are different from the ones you use on your dog.

Bissell included a sample size fabric soap and a full size bottle of no-rinse oatmeal dog shampoo.

The kit comes with two soap reservoirs: one is for dog shampoo, the other one is for upholstery. They are labeled so you don’t mix them up, and when you use the machine you simply snap the correct soap container into place. It’s very easy and straightforward.

They have also included the mat (to dampen the sound of the machine), a microfiber cloth (to wipe feet and face), and a bag to store all of the pieces and parts.

The cord and the hose wrap neatly onto the Bark Bath machine itself, which I like because I cannot stand storing things with errant tangled up cords.

    IMG 0319

How Does the Bark Bath Work?

The machine is easy to set up (see above where I mentioned pouring the included shampoo into the reservoir, which pre-measures and dispenses soap for you as you clean).

With Danes, the short hair combs are perfect.

I started with my most easy-going confident dog who loves being brushed, just so I could see how the machine worked.

You do not have to wet the coat or scrub it in advance. I do think brushing it first with a Sleek EZ to remove surface dander and extra fur can provide the best results, though.

I had him stand on a towel and then before I turned the machine on, I ran the brush down his back a few times. Then we got started for real.

It literally works just like a carpet cleaner! You depress the button and soap and water comes out, then as you move the wand down the fur, it scrubs and sucks up the water (and dirt). You can see the water and dirt getting sucked back off of your dog.

The water ends up in a reservoir and let me tell you, it was NASTY.

I am able to easily “wash” a whole mildly dirty (not muddy) 130lb Great Dane in about 15 minutes with some solid time spent on his tummy and legs. Once I was finished with shampoo, I switched to ‘rinse only’ mode and ran through his coat one more time.

Do you know those satisfying lines that the carpet gets after you vacuum? This happens with your dog and the Bark Bath, too!

Once I was done, my dog was only a little damp. It was easy to towel dry him and send him on his way!

Does the Bark Bath Actually Get a Dog Clean?

    Honestly?

    So far, so good.

I’ve run the machine on all three of my dogs multiple times and they are shiny, clean, and smell great. I have no complaints.

Do I think it beats an experienced groomer doing a traditional bath in a salon? No. Nobody can beat that, those people know their stuff.

Is it better than, or similar to an a typical at-home bath? YES! It absolutely replaces a DIY bath in your tub or walk-in shower.

The Bark Bath absolutely got my dogs clean with minimal mess and drama, too.

One of the biggest benefits I can see with a tool like this is that it’s also VERY simple and easy to use for just a quick ‘surface clean’ when you don’t want to deep clean your dog.

This could also be a game-changer for dogs with seasonal and environmental allergies. Just keep it ready-to-go in the mudroom and suck up all the gunk your dog tracks in on their coat.

With a little more time spent, it absolutely gets the dog as clean as a bath, too.

What is the Bark Bath Recommended For?

Having now used (and decided to fall in love with) the Bark Bath, I think it’s an exceptional tool for many situations:

    • All people who want their dogs clean
    • Dogs that are afraid of traditional baths
    • Pet parents who cannot physically wrestle their giant dog into a tub
    • Dogs with sensitive skin that benefit from keeping irritants off of their coat
    • People who let their dogs run and play in mud and dirt often
    • Pets that have lost their mobility and need to be on a stable or soft surface for bathing

The Bark Bath is currently $189 – 199 on Amazon and payment plans may be available. This machine will pay for itself if you are used to frequenting the self-serve dog wash!

    81cDV8n BPL. AC SL1500 1

What Kind of Shampoo Does the Bark Bath Use?

Bissell makes a shampoo specifically for use with this machine, and says that using other shampoos can void the warranty. This is a common practice in similar (carpet and upholstery) appliances as suds and bubbles or certain soap formulations can harm the machinery.

My Bark Bath came with Oatmeal shampoo. It smells amazing and left my dogs fur soft and shiny, so I haven’t tried the other varieties yet. They offer four types:

All of these choices are soothing and safe to use on puppies, too.

My complaint? It does NOT go far. With giant breed dogs, you’ll go through a lot of the soap.

The machine DOES give you a ‘rinse only’ option that doesn’t pull soap into the water spray and if I would remember to switch to that I wouldn’t go through quite so much shampoo. My bad.

Photo of my Bark Bath cleaned dogs on their Big Barker Bed.

Where Can I Buy a Bark Bath?

I’ve only found one place to purchase a Bark Bath, though I’m sure they can be obtained through some other online retailers.

Amazon has very fast shipping and may offer a payment plan on this device.

You can get it on Amazon HERE.

Do I recommend Bark Bath? Without a question. The Dane community is currently sleeping on this device, but truly, it’s awesome. I would say this is definitely in my top ten “must have” tools for owning Great Danes!

What is the Best Dog Food Container? The Top 10 Things to Look for When Trying to Store Dry Dog Food

Finding a dog food storage container for your pet food can be harder than you think. You want something that is easy to clean and looks stylish, while also being secure enough to keep your pet’s food fresh. After doing a lot of research on dog food storage containers, we have compiled the best options available on the market today.

What is the Best Dog Food Container

Storage containers come in all sorts of different sizes and structures, so we identified some of the top things to look for and to avoid when finding a pet food container.

What is the best dog food container? Top things to look for to store dry dog food.

When looking for a pet food container to keep dog food inside, you may just grab plastic bins and call it a day. However, after further research we found that storing food in some standard food storage containers can be problematic for dry dog food.

So, we identified a list of the top 10 things to look for in a pet food container or for dog treats.

    1. The right size: Decide ahead of time exactly how much food you are going to want to store in the food container. Shopping on Amazon can be deceptive and you might think you are buying a large container but when it shows up you can barely fit any food inside.
    2. Airtight seal: Without an airtight food storage container your dog food storage can let in air and expose the dry food to certain elements like humidity which can cause the food to go stale.
    3. Easy Cleaning: Believe it or not, plastic containers can develop mold over time when storing an entire bag of dog food. It is important that the container you choose is easily cleanable and washable.
    4. BPA-free: BPA is a chemical used in most plastics and it can leach into your dog’s food, so make sure that the storage container you choose is completely BPA free. BPA Free Plastic is the way to go if you are going for a plastic container.
    5. Durable material: The best dog food containers will not only keep your dog’s kibble fresh, but also the material itself will last over time.
    6. Material: The material you choose is ultimately up to you. You can get dog food storage containers in stainless steel, thick plastic, or glass. We will discuss the different materials that you can use for dog food storage.
    7. Lock Tight Handle: Make sure that the dog food storage containers that you choose comes with a lock tight handle. This will help keep a tight seal on the food storage, preventing any pests from entering.
    8. Design: The container should look stylish and modern, but also be functional for your pup’s food needs.
    9. Affordability: Nobody wants to spend hundreds of dollars just to store dry food for their animals, so affordability was important, especially for those who have multiple pets.
    10. Convenience: Whether you prefer pouring food directly from the plastic container or using a food scoop, the food container must have ease of use when feeding your dog. After all, you do feed your dogs multiple times a day and with a multi pet household it cannot be a process that is time-consuming or lingering.

Let’s jump in to some of the reasons why these are the top 10 things to look for in a pet food container and why it’s important that you get the best dog food container for your pup.

The Right Size Food Container Makes a Huge Difference

The right size: You will want to make sure that whatever you buy is capable of holding all of the dry food that you need for your pup.

Food storage containers come in all different sizes that can all store dry food.

Depending on if you have large dogs or small dogs, you may want to get a large food storage bin to keep in the laundry room or closet, and a smaller container to keep in the pantry. When the small container runs out of food, simply refill it with how much kibble can fit. The smaller food container will, perhaps, hold enough food for about 4 days to 1 week, but it will be easy enough to refill.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of refilling the small container, you can also get a larger one that will hold enough food to last an entire month or more. That way, you won’t have to worry about refilling it as often.

Here is an example of a smaller size dog food storage container:

And here is an example of larger size food containers which could store the entire bag of your dog’s kibble:

Food / Meal Prep in Food Storage Containers

Some people like to sort out the serving size of their dog’s meals on the weekend when they have additional time.

These are my favorite food storage containers that do just that. They come in bulk off of Amazon and are suitable for storing all of your dog’s weekly meals ahead of time so that you don’t have to measure and serve in the morning rush when you are busy.

    Airtight Seals are Essential

Airtight seals: Keeping the unwanted air out of the dog food is paramount in order to prevent spoilage, mold growth and infestation of bugs. The best dog food storage containers will come with an airtight seal to ensure that your pup’s kibble stays fresh for as long as possible.

How to tell if your dog food storage is airtight:

You can tell if the dog food storage is actually an airtight food storage container by checking the seal around the lid. If the container has multiple layers of seals, then it is most likely airtight.

    The Vault

‘The Vault’ is a very popular airtight container. People really like this airtight food storage container because:

    1. They are stackable containers so you can use multiple for different dogs or different food
    2. They come in different sizes
    3. Obviously, it is an airtight container
    4. The plastic is BPA Free (More on bpa free plastic later)

Easy to Clean and Keep Sanitary

As a pet owner, you know that keeping your pup’s environment clean can be tricky at times. This also applies to their food containers.

Dog food storage can get gross very quickly.

As a matter of fact, it is recommended not to dump the entire food bag straight into the food containers. In some cases, it has been shown that food poured directly into dog food storage containers can actually spoil faster and even grow mold at the bottom of the bin.

    Washable / Cleanable Features

You will want to look for storage containers that have a lid which can be easily detached and washed in the sink or dishwasher. This will make it easier to keep your pup’s food container clean and sanitized, thus keeping their dry food fresher for longer periods of time.

    Create a Cleaning Routine

Make a cleaning routine for your storage container. If you don’t plan and schedule to clean your pet food storage on a certain routine, it might not get done. When the dog food is nearly empty, it is a good idea to completely empty the dog food storage containers and rinse them out with some soap and water.

    Removable Inner Bucket

Some find it easier to keep a dog food storage container clean when it comes with a removable plastic bucket. That way, you can just remove the plastic liner from the storage container and rinse that part without having to wash the entire storage container.

Here is an example of a pet food storage container that is easily cleanable with an airtight seal:

    BPA Free

Making sure your dog food container is BPA Free is important.

Whether you are storing fresh food, dry food, pet food or human food, having food grade plastic will help to keep your pet’s food safe and healthy.

BPA stands for Bisphenol A, which is a chemical compound commonly used in plastic products. The problem is that this substance has been linked to health issues such as cancer and hormonal disruptions.

By making sure the plastic your pet food storage container is made of is BPA Free, you can rest assured that your pet food is not being exposed to any potentially harmful chemicals.

Along with getting a dog food storage container with safe and toxic-free plastic, you can also get water bowls that are BPA-free as well:

    Durable Dog Food Storage Container

Durability matters in what dog food container you choose. You can get what you think is the best pet food storage container, but if it only lasts a month before it breaks, you’re going to need to keep buying new ones.

If you want a container that will last, look for one that is made with thick plastic materials and has sturdy seals around the lids. This will help ensure your pup’s food stays fresh and secure in the container even if it accidentally gets tipped over or dropped.

Storing Dog Food in Stainless Steel Containers

Some people prefer their storage container to be stainless steel rather than food-grade plastic, and that is fine.

The Simplehuman Pet Food Storage is one of the most popular dog food containers. It stores up to 35 Liters of your pet’s food and comes in a stainless steel container.

The price is higher than a plastic dog food storage container, but the durability is much higher.

Material of Your Pet Food Storage

Speaking of stainless steel, that brings us to discussing what material you’d like to store your pet food in.

As with any typical storage container, your dog’s food has options of what it can be stored in.

You can store your dog’s food in stainless steel material, food-grade plastic, or even glass.

The material you choose will depend on your preferences and budget.

    Stainless Steel Pros and Cons

If you are looking for something durable and long-lasting, then stainless steel might be best for you. However, you are going to spend more money on stainless steel than you would on cheaper alternatives of food containers.

Some pet parents notice their dogs get ‘puppy or dog acne’ when they interact with certain plastics, and therefore opt for a steel or ceramic option.

Others prefer the aesthetic of a steel option, such as this one:

Plastic Food Containers Pros and Cons

However, if you’re just looking for a low-cost option that will keep food fresh in the short term, then a food-grade plastic storage container works fine for pet food storage.

As long as your dog’s food stays fresh, you don’t have to feel bad opting for plastic as a dog food container.

There are a ton of great options for plastic pet food storage that look great as well, like these:

    Lock Tight Handle

No matter what material you choose for your pet food storage, make sure that it comes with a lock tight handle.

The last thing you want is rodents or insects getting into the pet food storage container, or your pet accidentally (or purposefully) tipping it over and spilling food out.

A lock-tight handle will keep the lid on securely and help ensure that the storage container stays in place even if it gets bumped or dropped.

The best dog food storage will keep the dog’s food safe from ALL animals, including your dog AND unwanted animals.

These dog food containers, for example, have container features that completely lock up so that no other creature can get to the food.

    Choosing Your Favorite Design

Dog food containers don’t HAVE to be ugly. Although I opt to stick my dog food containers in the closet, some of the best dog food storage CAN be functional and pretty.

Try to decide whether you’d like to store the dog food containers away in a closet or on your kitchen counter as a part of your home decorations, and go from there.

    Functional (But not so pretty)

If you opt for a functional and not-so-beautiful pet food storage container, you may go for something like the Van Ness Food Container, found here:

Pretty (But maybe a bit less functional)

Alternatively, if you want something to compliment your house design, you may opt for something like this. You can also find something to store dog food that comes with a matching bin for storing treats, which is always fun.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you and what type of design you prefer for your pet food storage container.

You’ll want to ensure that whatever pet food storage you choose, it is durable and long-lasting, and comes with a secure locking handle.

Affordability – Ain’t Nobody Got Money for That

Nobody wants to spend all of their money to store dog food. We know you’d rather spend your money on taking your dog for a Pup-Cup or getting them a nice new bed.

We found several dog food storage options that are stylish, functional and affordable.

Take a look at this one, which is one of the options I have used regularly with my dogs:

I would give this one the following scores:

    1. Durability: B- (Easily cracks, but you get what you pay for)
    2. Affordability: A
    3. Style/Design: B- (Nothing beautiful)
    4. Airtight Seal: A (Nothing going in or out)
    5. Keeps Food Fresh: A (Does its job)
    6. Large: A (Depending on how much food you like to keep on hand, this one stores an entire 25 lb bag)
    7. Convenience: A (I mean unless you’re a super lazy person, which would be hard to beat me- this is really easy…)

    Overall- pretty good option.

Convenience – I don’t want to work hard to feed my dogs!

Lastly, everyone wants it to be easy to grab their dog’s food.

I don’t want to wrestle with my dog’s food container every time I have to feed them, and I’m sure you don’t either.

So, finding a convenient option is a must.

Overall, I think the Gamma2 Vittles Vault ranks highest on Amazon for ease of use (and other items too).

Seems if you’re a lazy person (like me) with a bit of an extra budget to spend on durability, than the Gamma2 Vittles Vault may be a great option for you.

DO WEST PAW TOPPL INTERACTIVE TOYS KEEP DOGS ENTERTAINED?

Do West Paw Toppl interactive toys keep dogs entertained? That’s a puzzle. But we chew on the question and come up with this: it depends on the dog. Some dogs will go for anything that’s new, and others need to be coaxed with a treat. But all pups will eventually get bored with the same old toy, which is why it’s important to have a variety of puzzle, chew and treat toys on hand.

For my dogs, the answer is yes. Let’s dive into why and how.

5 Dog Boredom Busters: Keep Your Pup Cool!

WHAT STRUGGLES DID MY DOGS HAVE WITH DOG TOYS RELATED TO FOOD / ENGAGEMENT?

My dogs were either bored with previous toys like the Kong and left it alone, or they weren’t smart enough to get the food out quickly and left it all in there to melt.

I started to feel like I was spending all of this time making them Kong’s for my OWN ENGAGEMENT! The engagement activity was digging it all out in the sink just to get the Kong clean. It REALLY stinks to spend time, money and effort to fill up food puzzles for your dogs, just to spend 20 minutes then rinsing it all out– I felt like groundhogs day.

There were times when the food got stuck in the hole of the toy, and they were unable to get it out, leaving the Kong at risk of mold and mildew.

Food puzzles had become a big source of frustration for us. They were just maybe too lazy to use a Kong. I decided that the Kong was not for us anymore. It was just TOO MUCH WORK for me and NOT ENOUGH FULFILLMENT for them.

That is when I decided to try the West Paw Toppl, even though I was hesitant.

WHAT SIZES DO THE WEST PAW TOPPL COME IN?

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

The two sizes of the West Paw Toppl come in small, large and extra large. The three sizes are sold separately.

But, honestly no matter what size dog you have, the price for the two sizes are about the same (give or take a few bucks) and the large can be used for a small dog. Just simply put the Toppl back in the freezer after a few minutes and reuse later.

Or, buy the small / medium / large based on the size of your dog or puppy!

I personally have the size large West Paw dog toy and use it for both my 125 lb Great Dane and my 5 lb puppy.

WEST PAW TOPPL FOR BIGGER DOGS

If you have bigger dogs, definitely go for the Large size. The large toppl toy is not necessarily a ‘big’ dog toy, but its big enough for them to eat out of, which is my FAVORITE part about it

The biggest complaint I have with the Kong is that the hole at the top was too small for my giant breeds to eat from. They’d get bored, the stuff got stuck, they’d stop eating, it would get gross.. You get the point.

Getting the large sizes in the toppl treat allowed my pet to enjoy the toy almost immediately. It did take them some time to understand the toppl treat, but DEFINITELY not as long as it took them with any other food toy (which was nearly never- ha).

WEST PAW TOPPL FOR SMALLER DOGS

If you have a smaller dog, you can get the smaller toy.

The toppl comes in the small and large size. However, I do believe you can use the large toppl for small dogs.

HOW DO YOU USE THE WEST PAW TOPPL DOG TOY?

This treat toy is meant to fill with food and keep your dog busy.

Reasons you can use the topple treat:

    1. Hold treats for your dog to make them last longer
    2. Provide a healthy snack
    3. Fill with What is the Best Food for Dogs with Upset Stomach? The Top Home Remedies for Dog’s Diarrhea” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>food and top off with a few treats to provide mental engagement and enrichment
    4. Use it as a treat toy to help keep your dog’s brain busy and enriched
    5. Lessen anxiety
    6. Slow down your dog while eating

    FILLING THE TOPPL PUZZLE TOY

The topple treat toy has a more appropriate shape than other chew toys meant for filling up, in my opinion which allows their tongue to get in easier and allows for zero waste.

Just take the treat toy and fill it with either your dog’s favorite food, snack, some wet kibble, or canned food and then freeze.

You can use it as a dog toy / more for treats or you can also use it as a meal replacement.

COMPARING THE WEST PAW TOPPL TO A KONG TOY

A Kong treat toy never worked out for my Great Danes.

They like other treat dispensing toys and similar items, but with the Kong they seemed to get bored and not be able to get the items out. The hole seemed too small and ultimately just created more work for me.

Because of the way the toppl treat toy is made with the wide opening, they are able to more easily interact with both the small and large toppls. It seems more species appropriate than having them stick their tongue in such a small spot.

As an added bonus, the small and large toppls seem MUCH easier to clean. With others, I always worried that mold and grossness was going to start growing on the inside. But with these ones the hole is wide enough that I can clearly make sure that they are thoroughly cleaned aftewards.

CAN YOU USE THE WEST PAW TOPPL FOR FEEDING MEALS?

Absolutely! These are the only toys I use to regularly give my pups their meals.

I use wet food and mix it with water, stick it in the freezer and later let them enjoy!

You may not have a beautiful meal like you see on the internet, but who cares! Mine are never pretty- but they are delicious and healthy.

Something cool that is sold separately than the toppl treat are these adorable little additions for the clever dogs. If your dog is able to figure out how to use the toy immediately, you can make the job harder by adding this to the inner ridges and challenging them.

USING A WEST PAW TOPPL FOR ENGAGEMENT AND TREATS

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

Typically, I just use the West Paw toppl for mealtimes, but you can also use it for healthy treats.

Just fill up the toy with anything you’d like! Then, add bone broth or water to be able to freeze it all together before you feed (freezing will make it last much longer when you feed it!)

Ideas for things to add in:

    1. Cottage Cheese
    2. Apple Sauce
    3. Slices of Granny smith apple (My dogs LOVE Granny Smith apples for some reason!)
    4. Yogurt
    5. Peanut Butter
    6. Fish oil
    7. Cheese
    8. Mashed up fruit or vegetables
    9. Your own homemade dog food recipes
    10. Store-bought dog food
    11. Mashed banana

Whatever you can think of! Be creative- your pup will love it. ?

I have also found that using the wet food along with some kibble or dry treats works great too! The toppl treat dispensing toy is great for mental engagement and enrichment, especially if you dog is prone to anxiety or boredom. You can use it as a puzzle toy by filling it with their favorite treats

IS THE WEST PAW TOPPL DISHWASHER SAFE?

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

I have washed my West Paw toppl nearly 10 times and it is completely dishwasher safe!

The company states that you should use only the top rack dishwasher shelf in order to make sure it does not melt.

After dinner, I typically rinse it out to get any leftover gunk out, then stick it in the dishwasher. So yes, it is definitely dishwasher safe.

The only negative I have with the West Paw toppl treat dispensing toy is that it does not come in many different colors.

I wish there were more color options to choose from because right now it is only available in three colors- tangerine, neon green and aqua blue. I have one of each of these colors, but the primary color that I love is the aqua blue. But- keep in mind our dogs see colors in different ways than we do anyways- so the colors don’t bug them!

ARE THE WEST PAW TOPPL DOG TREAT TOYS CHEW PROOF?

I do not believe that the West Paw Toppl is chew proof.

However, you should consider that this is not a chew toy.

If your dog loves to chew things, you should monitor them while they eat their meal for your dog’s safety.

Moderate chewers could probably get away with it if they are just chewing it while they’re eating but direct chewing on the toy would likely damage it and could even cause an obstruction should they swallow it.

ARE THE WEST PAW TOPPL DOG CHEW TOYS SAFE?

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

Most animals love to eat but dog owners should monitor their dogs while they do so!

I do believe that the West Paw toppl is a more appropriate shape for animals not to get their tongues stuck inside while they are eating.

The material is also non toxic.

I have had zero concerns with my Great Dane’s safety while they use the items. My two suggestions would be:

    1. Always monitor your animals while they are eating for your dog’s safety
    2. Always read the labels of any items you include in their meals

If you have pets you know that finding a good way to keep them from getting bored is hard.

You dont always have time to play with them all day long.

Well, the Toppl Treat could be a great solution for you.

PLUG UP THE HOLE WITH PEANUT BUTTER

My first step is always to plug up the side hole with peanut butter. I’m talking about this hole:

Playful Watercolor Blue Minimalist Logo Name Instagram Post 3.23.12 PM

I fill this up so that the rest of the items don’t come falling out once I start pouring them in. Mistake I’ve made the hard way many times.

CANNED DOG FOOD AND WATER WITH TREATS

Remember- your pet does not care if it looks like a masterpiece.

Just take canned food, stuff it in there, fill the rest with water, mix it together, and then add a few treats on top!

    Done…..

    Easy right?

    Don’t forget to freeze.

DEHYDRATED RAW OR REGULAR RAW WITH TREATS

You get the point… Do the same exact thing as above but with dehydrated raw or standard raw food!

I like to crumple up some dehydrated raw or balanced wet raw (We love Raws Paws) and then pour water over top of it. Sometimes I’ll add some veggies on top, then freeze.

    WET KIBBLE

If you feed kibble- do the same exact thing but with kibble!

It really does not get easier than that!

WEST PAW’S PUZZLE TOY IS A GAME CHANGER

The West Paw Topple is one of the only toys that my dogs will successfully be able to eat their meal from.

If you’re looking for dog toys for them to play with, this probably isnt the right one for you.

But if you’re looking for a top rack dishwasher safe treat toy that you can use to keep your pup entertained, they’ll take to the toy immediately, it’ll bust their boredom, and can be used with both a senior dog or puppy, then you should definitely purchase.

Embark DNA Review: Worthwhile or Waste of Time? 6 Things I Learned!

Coming in hot with my non-biased Embark DNA Review!

A few months ago I decided to do an Embark DNA Test for my Great Danes, even though I assumed they are purebred dogs.

Although I figured my dog’s results in the breed identification portion of the breed health kit would be Great Dane, I still wanted to get the test results and thought it would be fun to see both their breed results and their health report.

Here’s how my process went, what it was like to complete the DNA test and get my dog’s tested, and what pet owners should expect when taking an Embark DNA test.

ONE: EMBARK DNA REVIEW: THE DIFFERENT DNA TESTS AND WHY I CHOSE TO DO AN EMBARK TEST

There are a few different types of DNA tests for dogs. The most popular ones are the Embark and the Wisdom Panel.

The Wisdom Panel is a test that tells you the breeds in your dog’s ancestry going back three generations. It also screens for more than 250 different diseases. The Embark dog dna tests for over 160 different breeds and screens for more than 175 different genetic health conditions.

In 2019, Embark said its breed results were 95% to 99% accurate. At the time, Embark analyzed 110 times more genetic markers than Wisdom Panel, so its results were more granular (200,000 versus 1,800, respectively).

After debating between an Embark and Wisdom Panel, I chose to do an Embark test because of the sheer amount of dogs tested compared to Wisdom.

With the amount of dog’s dna that Embark has tested compared to Wisdom- I felt more assured with their dog dna test.

TWO: EMBARK DNA TEST: THE DIFFERENT TESTS

The process of completing a dna test on your fur baby is pretty simple.

First, you need to decide which test you want to take.

Embark offers three different forms of genetic testing for dog owners:

    BREED + HEALTH KIT

The Breed + Health Kit is the most comprehensive dna test of your dog’s sample.

This test costs $159, and tests your dog’s breed, potential health risks that your dog will face based upon genetics, and provides a family tree.

This test gives a thorough breed composition as well as can go as far back as great grandparents on your pup’s family tree.

    Embark DNA Review

    PUREBRED KIT

The Purebred Kit tests your dog’s dna for potential health risks as well as contains a breed identification kit. This health test kit is also $159.

This sample, however, is more targeted to the dog’s genetic makeup in regards to comparing it with another dog dna test that is related.

This sample kit could be used for canine research, breeders, or scientific research. Breeders often look at this kit for obtaining health results of the dog’s parents- however you should NOT rely on health results from a breeder who relies on a dog’s dna or breed ancestry from Embark. Refer to our blog post on OFA Health Testing.

    Embark DNA Review

    BREED ID

The Breed ID kit is a simplified version of the breed health kit in the sense that it DOES NOT include any potential health issues that your dog’s DNA implies.

The breed identification kit ONLY checks for what dog breed your pup is- and can provide family trees on your rescue dog, any mixed breed of up to 350 dog breeds. So, instead of BOTH a health DNA report AND a breed identification report, the breed identification kit is ONLY providing you with breed identification.

The Breed ID Kit will look at the genetic makeup of your dog’s traits in the breed identification process in order to inform you what dog breed you have.

If you are looking to just simply provide a dna sample and learn about the breed ancestry of your dog, the Breed ID kit features just that for $109.

THREE: GIVING A DNA TEST TO YOUR DOG: WHAT’S IN IT FOR DOG OWNERS?

One of the primary reasons I wanted to do a dog dna test review was because of the fun and easy process of getting my dog’s results: from start to finish.

    Embark DNA Review

It was SO much easier to complete the dna test than I thought it would be. Here is how it went:

    CHOOSING THE BREED HEALTH KIT

First, I made the decision to purchase the Breed Health Kit.

Remember, the Breed Health Kit is the dog DNA test that checks for BOTH health markers as well as breed identification. The cost of my sample kit was $159.

RECEIVE THE KIT IN THE MAIL

When you get the DNA test in the mail- you need to activate it.

Go online and register your kit. Inside of your kit you will find a code that is individual to your dog.

Click on the ‘Activate Kit’ button as shown below. This will prompt you to create an account for your doggo and register your dog’s sample.

    Embark DNA Review

Trick: I opted NOT to fill out the physical traits of my dog OR add any photos prior to getting my results. I wanted to see if the dog DNA test was accurate enough to REALLY know that she was a Great Dane before I shared all of her physical traits with the portal.

    SWAB YOUR PUP

Next, you want to swab your pup.

The DNA sample is collected with a swab that is provided in the kit.

You want to make sure you get a good sample- so I recommend following the directions clearly- I have seen some Embark reviews stating that their dog DNA test came back a few weeks later requesting an additional swab (owners did not swab thoroughly enough).

I swabbed my pup’s gums and inside of her cheek for 30 seconds. Then, I stuck the swab back into the swab vial and put it into the prepaid envelope.

    MAIL YOUR RESULTS

It really is as easy as that! After you have swabbed- stick the prepaid envelope with your dog dna test into the mail.

Then comes the hard part- the waiting! The test can take WEEKS to come back- even months.

My test results came back within about 6 weeks- but luckily Embark sent a few emails along the way to let me know that the dog dna test had made its way to the facility and give updates that they were working on finding the results, etc.

FOUR: WHAT DID I LEARN WHEN I GOT MY DOG’S DNA TEST BACK?

As soon as your dna test results are back- you will get an email with the results.

If you got the Breed ID Kit- your results will be JUST breed identification related. If you got the Breed/Health kit, like I did, your results will be indicative of both breed/genetic diversity/dog’s background as well as indicators of any health markers you should be aware of within your dog’s genetic diversity.

Your ‘portal’ looks like this, and is broken up into multiple sections: Health, Breed and Relatives.

    image 5

    HEALTH

The Embark Dog DNA Test checks for 210+ genetic health risks. That is more genetic health risks than any other dog dna test on the market.

The Embark Dog DNA Test also screens for the MDR-01 gene that predisposes dogs to adverse reactions to certain drugs. Basically, this means that if your pup has this gene- they may have a harder time metabolizing certain types of drugs and may need a lower dosage or different drug altogether.

    Gigi’s Health Results

The test will also let you know if your pup is a carrier of any genetic diseases, even if they don’t have the disease themselves. This is important information to have because it means you can be extra vigilant about health screenings for those diseases and make sure you are not breeding carriers with other carriers (which can produce puppies with the disease).

Because it checks for common adult onset diseases, the test can be used preventatively to help you stay on top of any diseases that are common in your dog’s breed.

    BREEDS

The Embark Dog DNA Test can identify more than 350 breeds, including some wolf and coyote content. This is the most breed diversity of any dog dna test on the market.

My pup’s results said she was 100% Great Dane- which I knew. But, it was SUPER fun to dive into the colors that she carried for, as it also checks your dog’s coat and colors.

    Screen Shot 2022 06 02 at 9.35.38 AM
    Gigi’s Colors

The test will give you a ‘breed family tree’ that shows what percentage of each breed is in your pup as well as the history/origin of each breed.

    RELATIVES

This was my favorite part of the results .

The Embark Dog DNA Test will tell you how closely related your pup is to other dogs in their database.

My pup is distantly related to another dog in the database that is also 100% Great Dane. I also found several other relatives including a possible match for great grandparents.

A few of the dogs who share DNA with Gigi

I was able to reach out to one pet parent who shared a TON of physical traits (and DNA!) with Gigi and we talked for a few messages about how fun it would be if Gigi and Layla ever got to meet.

FIVE: ARE DOG DNA TESTS WORTH IT?

I do believe that the Embark dog dna test is worth it.

Although it is a bit pricy, I was glad that I went with the Health AND Breed identification kit.

If you already know your dog’s breed, but want to check for health markers only, there is no other option BUT to purchase the kit with both breed identification and health.

If you do not know your dog’s breed, they are a mixed breed or rescue, and you ONLY want to find out their breed- you can opt for the $109 breed identification kit- but in my opinion it is worth the extra $50 to get the health information as well.

I think the Embark Dog DNA Test is especially worth it if you have a pup with unknown parentage.

The test can give you a lot of information about genetic diversity as well as any markers you should be aware of.

SIX: SHOULD THE EMBARK DOG DNA TEST BE USED BY BREEDERS TO HEALTH TEST?

In my opinion, breeders should NOT use the Embark Dog DNA Test to health test their adult dogs in order to prove that they are fit to breed.

It is just NOT sufficient enough to provide enough information.

There are other, much more comprehensive health tests that provide far more information about the health of a dog and their suitability to breed.

The Embark Dog DNA Test is a great tool for learning about your own pet- but it should not be used as the sole source of information when making breeding decisions.

    OPT FOR OFA HEALTH TESTING

When looking into dog breeds who are healthy and health tested, find a breeder who uses OFA Health Testing on their dogs.

OFA health testing tests things that Embark cannot test, like hips, heart, and eyes.
