10 Best Fruits and Vegetables for Dogs

Ensuring our furry companions receive a balanced diet is essential for their overall health and well-being. While meat is typically the primary component of a dog’s diet, incorporating fruits and vegetables can provide a range of health benefits. In this guide, we’ll explore the top 10 fruits and vegetables that are not only safe for dogs but also offer valuable nutrients to support their health.

10 Best Fruits and Vegetables for Dogs

The current trend of homemade dog food and incorporating fresh foods into a dog’s diet is gaining popularity! While I strongly advocate for science-backed kibble from WSAVA-compliant brands as the primary source of nutrition, I also believe there is room to supplement thoughtfully with fresh, whole foods.

I’ve included my 10 favorite fruits and vegetables for dogs below, as well as some fun tips for making them enriching for your pup.

Author’s Note: I’ve included some health benefits to each of the whole, fresh foods below. Please note, however, that these benefits are not a cure-all or magic pill! Always talk to your veterinarian.

    1. Blueberries for Dogs

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, making them an excellent choice for your dog’s snack time. These small, juicy berries can be fed fresh or frozen, and many dogs enjoy them as a tasty treat. Blueberries support cognitive function, aid in digestion, and contribute to a healthy immune system.

Freeze-dried blueberries, like these from the Thousand Lakes food company make a convenient and mess-free snack option for dogs!

You can also give your dog frozen blueberries, straight from the bag. I like to use them for training treats and fun treat-catching photos!

    2. Frozen Carrots Make Great Dog Chews

Crunchy and nutritious, carrots are a favorite among many dogs. They are low in calories and high in fiber, promoting dental health and aiding in digestion. Carrots are also rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A, essential for vision and immune function.

Frozen carrot sticks or carrot chips make excellent chewy treats for dogs of all sizes. You can even dip them first in canned food to enhance their appeal.

    3. DIY Apple Enrichment Toy for Dogs

Apples are a crunchy and hydrating snack for dogs, providing them with vitamins A and C, as well as fiber. Be sure to remove the seeds and core before feeding apples to your dog, as these parts can be a choking hazard. Apples support dental health, aid in digestion, and may even freshen breath.

Use a knife and cut the top off of an apple. Carefully core out the center of the apple, leaving as much of the apple flesh intact as possible. This will create an edible bowl that you can use to stuff with rehydrated kibble or canned food! Freeze this treat for long-lasting enrichment.

    6 6

    4. Make Spinach Cubes for your Dog

Spinach is a leafy green vegetable that is safe for dogs in moderation. It is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron and folate. Incorporating spinach into your dog’s diet can promote healthy bones, support the immune system, and contribute to overall vitality.

Frozen spinach cubes can be added to your pet’s kibble or homemade dog treats for a nutritional boost. Blend them up first (I love my NutraBullet for this) so that they are very digestible for your dog.

    5. Pumpkin, a Versatile Dog Treat

Pumpkin is rich in fiber, aiding in digestion and promoting regular bowel movements. Pumpkin is also a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as beta-carotene, which supports eye health and immune function.

Canned pureed pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) can be mixed into your dog’s food for added flavor and nutrients. You can even give your dog a whole fresh pie pumpkin (take the stem off) to roll around and play with; just make sure they don’t eat too much in one sitting.

Pro tip: take it easy on the pumpkin! Too much can have the opposite effect on stool quality. You’ve been warned!

    7 5

    6. Strawberries Dipped in Yogurt for Dogs

Strawberries are another fruit that dogs can enjoy in moderation. They are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, promoting overall health and well-being. Strawberries can also serve a tiny roll as a natural teeth whitener.

Fresh strawberries can be sliced and served as a refreshing treat for your furry friend. Dip them in plain yogurt to make a sweet Valentine’s day or summer treat!

    7. Green Beans for Weight Loss & Fiber

Green beans are a low-calorie, nutrient-rich vegetable that most dogs love. They are an excellent source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin K, which supports bone health. Green beans can also help dogs feel full without adding extra calories, making them a great option for weight management.

Freeze-dried green beans offer a crunchy texture and can be used as a healthy training treat.

    8. Yes, Dogs Can Have Watermelon, too!

Watermelon is a hydrating and delicious fruit that many dogs enjoy. It is low in calories and contains vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as antioxidants like lycopene. Feeding your dog watermelon in moderation can help keep them hydrated and provide essential nutrients.

Fresh watermelon chunks make a refreshing summer treat for dogs; try freezing them for added enrichment (remove the rind, please).

    9. Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Sweet potatoes are a nutritious root vegetable that dogs can benefit from. They are rich in vitamins A, C, and B6, as well as fiber and antioxidants. Sweet potatoes support digestive health, regulate blood sugar levels, and provide sustained energy.

Dehydrated sweet potato slices are a chewy and satisfying snack for dogs. My dogs go nuts for these Dr. Harvey’s Sweet Potato Chews!

    10. Cranberries Treat for Dogs

Cranberries are known for their urinary tract health benefits in humans, and they can offer similar benefits for dogs. They contain antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties that support bladder and kidney health. Cranberries can also help prevent urinary tract infections in dogs.

Dried cranberries can be sprinkled over your dog’s food for a tasty and nutritious addition. Never give your dog dried raisins or grapes!

    2 6

How Many Fresh Fruits & Vegetables Can I Give My Dog?

The amount of fresh fruits and vegetables you can safely give to your dog depends on several factors, including their size, age, weight, and overall health.

As a general guideline, treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake, and even less if you have a still-growing puppy.

When introducing new fruits and vegetables into your dog’s diet, start with small portions to gauge their reaction and watch for any signs of digestive upset. Too much fiber is not good for their tummies!

It’s also important to remember that not all fruits and vegetables are safe for dogs. Some may be toxic or cause digestive issues, such as grapes and onions. Always research and consult with your veterinarian before offering any new foods to your dog.

    Blend Those Veggies Up!

Blending vegetables before giving them to your dog can have several benefits:

    1. Improved Digestibility: Dogs have shorter digestive tracts compared to humans, which can make it difficult for them to break down plant matter efficiently. Blending vegetables into a smooth consistency can help predigest the fibers, making the nutrients more accessible and easier for your dog to absorb.
    2. Prevention of Choking Hazard: Some dogs may tend to gulp down large chunks of food, increasing the risk of choking. Blending vegetables into a puree eliminates the risk of choking on large pieces, ensuring safer consumption.
    3. Enhanced Palatability: Some dogs may be hesitant to eat whole vegetables due to texture or taste preferences. Blending vegetables into a smooth puree can help mask any undesirable textures or flavors, making them more appealing to your dog.
    4. Mixing with Other Ingredients: Blending vegetables allows you to easily mix them with other ingredients, such as meat or commercial dog food, creating a balanced and nutritious meal for your dog. This can be particularly beneficial if you’re preparing homemade dog food recipes that require a combination of ingredients.
    5. Customization: Blending vegetables gives you the flexibility to customize the texture and consistency based on your dog’s preferences and dietary needs. You can adjust the thickness of the puree to suit your dog’s taste and make it easier for them to consume.

Do Vegetables Prevent Cancer in Dogs?

While there is no definitive evidence that vegetables alone can prevent cancer in all dogs, incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into your dog’s diet as part of a balanced and nutritious meal may contribute to their overall health and potentially reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.

The effect may be minimal; tread cautiously with influencers who imply that lots of veggies are the key to preventing cancer in your dog!

Many fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and phytonutrients, which have been shown to have protective effects against oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are associated with cancer development.

For example, antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene help neutralize free radicals in the body, which can damage cells and contribute to cancer formation.

Too much can have the opposite effect, though! When dogs receive too much Vitamin C, for example, the anti-oxidant properties become pro-oxidant. While the word “pro” implies something positive, in this case, it’s not good.

Additionally, some vegetables, such as cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale, contain compounds called glucosinolates, which have been studied for their potential anticancer properties.

However, it’s essential to emphasize that while a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may offer health benefits, it should be part of a comprehensive approach to cancer prevention in dogs. Other factors, such as genetics, environmental exposures, and overall lifestyle, also play significant roles in cancer development.

Not only that, but if you are feeding a quality, balanced, WSAVA-Compliant dry diet such as Pro Plan, Hill’s Science Diet, or Royal Canin, your pup is receiving all of the nutrients they need.

If you substitute too much of an already balanced diet with fruits and vegetables, you could potentially cause preventable health issues in your pet resulting from nutritional deficiencies.

Consulting with your veterinarian about your dog’s diet and overall health is crucial. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your dog’s specific needs and help you create a balanced diet that supports their well-being and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Additionally, regular veterinary check-ups and screenings can help detect any potential health issues early on, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.

    Does Dog Kibble Contain Vegetables?

Yes, many commercial dog kibbles contain vegetables or fruits as an ingredient. These vegetables are often included to provide additional nutrients, fiber, and flavor to the dog food. Common vegetables found in dog kibble may include peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and broccoli, among others.

However, often these ingredients are included in such low amounts that they provide minimal nutritional benefit, akin to “fairy dust”.

Don’t fall prey to pet food marketing that wants you to believe a dry dog food has all of the benefits of fresh spinach, blueberries, and pomegranates.

You are much better off choosing a veterinary-recommended brand and adding fresh vegetables to your pet’s diet as a form of enrichment.

    Conclusion:
Adding fruits and vegetables to your dog’s diet can provide a range of health benefits, from supporting digestion to boosting the immune system. By incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables in moderation and consulting with your veterinarian, you can ensure that your furry friend enjoys a balanced and nutritious diet that promotes overall health and vitality.

Do Better for Danes: 2023 Resolutions

Happy New Year, Dane lovers! It’s time to make our list of 2023 Resolutions and this year I’m calling it “Do Better for Danes”. Here are 10 dog-inspired resolutions for all of us!

Pick one or pick them all, what resolutions do you have in 2023 to do better for your Dane?

    5 1

    #1 – Sparkly, Healthy Gnashers!

Did you know that dental problems in dogs are not only incredibly painful, but they can lead to tooth loss, heart disease and infections, too?

Resolve to keep your pups teeth in top shape this year. Daily brushing can go a long ways towards keeping gunk and bacteria at bay.

With lots of positive reinforcement and yummy toothpaste, even the most resistant dog can learn to tolerate teeth brushing!

Read here to learn more about veterinary dental cleanings, which are the gold standard for dogs and a great place to get started if your dental maintenance is a little behind.

This article covers some of the best vet-recommended dog chews as well, which can be helpful for removing daily tartar and plaque build up.

    10 1

    #2 – Time for a Pawdicure

Overgrown nails on Great Dane Dogs lead to pain, arthritis, joint damage, breakage, and changes to the way the dog moves and walks.

If the nails touch the ground, it’s time for a pawdicure!

Of course, some dogs are incredibly resistant to this process. For those dogs, veterinary advice is a must. Daily positive interactions with nail trims (even if just seeing the nail tool in exchange for a treat) is a step in the right direction, too!

We prefer to keep our Danes nails short and round, the same style seen on show dogs. Short nails are written into the breed standard because they are best for orthopedic health.

For trimming Great Dane nails, we recommend a DREMEL tool and diamond or sanding bit.

Weekly nail trimming is the gold standard. Not there yet? Make this one of your top “Do Better for Danes” resolution this year.

    #3 – A Shiny Coat

Having a dull, dry, itchy coat is uncomfortable for your dog and may be a sign of other health problems, too.

A shiny coat is not only eye-catching, but healthier and more comfortable for your dog to live in!

Here are some top shiny-coat tips for your Great Dane:

If your dog has a dull coat and chronically itchy or problematic skin, it’s time to see a veterinarian. They may be able to refer you to a veterinary nutritionist, internest, allergist, or dermatologist so you can get to the root of the issue.

    #4 – Healthy Weight

Of course, in humans “diet culture” and “weight loss resolutions” have become a toxic and dangerous space. For dogs, however, it’s a different story.

Humans can be a size 18 or a size 2 and still be incredibly healthy either way. We are not dogs; we have different needs and a much different build. We also have much more control over the food we are fed.

Dogs unfortunately cannot control their diet.

Great Danes that carry extra weight will, on average, shorten their lifespan by around 2 years.

It is never good to bulk up a Great Dane in the interest of making them heftier, bigger, or more robust. Great Danes are actually a lean, athletic breed and seeing a rib or two is not only normal, but desirable.

If your Great Dane needs to lose weight, talk to your veterinarian about a balanced weight-loss diet and appropriate exercise.

    17 1

    #5 – Boredom Busters

Did you know that many behavioral problems, including separation anxiety, are a direct result of boredom?

Destruction, whining, pacing, barking, laziness, and even reactivity can be brought on by, or worsened in dogs that are well…bored. Resolve this year to alleviate boredom in your dog. Give them the best life possible with natural enrichment opportunities.

Most dogs do not receive enough exercise or enrichment. In most cases, a walk on pavement, toys, a yard, and another dog are not nearly enough.

Here is a list of things you can do to bust boredom in your dog (and better their social, obedience, and separation skills in the process!)

With proper exercise and socialization, many people are surprised to find that a lot of nuisance behaviors are greatly minimized, if not eliminated. Enrichment is fun and a great opportunity to bond with your dog, too!

    16

    #6 – Get Off-Leash, Finally!

We believe that Danes should be off-leash as much as possible.

Their giant bodies and joints are susceptible to damage which can be made worse by the restrictions and pressure from harnesses, head collars, and collars…especially if they lunge or pull a lot!

Of course, teaching a solid loose-leash walk is 100% necessary. However, when possible, Danes should be allowed to move as naturally and freely as much as they can.

Enter the modern E-Collar. This is the only tool on the market that is more gentle than a Gentle Leader, and allows complete, unrestricted freedom of movement.

If your Great Dane will come when called from 10-20 feet away in a low distraction environment, your Dane can be E-Collar trained and reliably off-leash within weeks.

#7 – Ditch the Food Shaming

Did you know that some of the best dog foods available for your Great Dane are not actually the most expensive or fancy ones?

Marketing has taught us to equate fancy, unregulated terms such as “holistic” and “super-premium” with better nutrition. These things are often nothing more than marketing schemes meant to separate your money from your wallet.

This year, we encourage the Dane community to ditch food shaming.

If you want the best nutrition for your Great Dane, skip the boutique foods and look towards science and research, instead. There are proven options available at all price points, and because they are fully complete and balanced, no expensive unbalanced toppers are needed.

I recommend a large or giant breed food from tried and true brands such as Purina, Royal Canin, or Eukanuba for Great Danes. Hill’s or Iam’s are great, too. Purina One Large Breed is a solid, budget-friendly option, for example.

Read our best foods for Great Danes post HERE.

For healthy toppers that don’t break the bank and have actual benefits (such as reducing the risk of bloat or cleaning teeth) try one of these:

    • Canned food such as Purina ONE or Pro Plan to provide fresh/wet food in the diet
    • Balanced raw food from RAWS PAWS. Use code HELLODANES for 10% off to replace a portion of their balanced dry food
    • Scrambled eggs (5 or less per week)
    • Minced or blended fruits and vegetables from your kitchen (less than 5% of the diet)
    • Raw turkey necks or chicken paws (for dogs that know how to crunch them up properly, 1 each week)

    Above All, in 2023…

Let’s all do better for Danes.

We’re going to support ethical breeders and ethical rescues…and make it socially irresponsible for breeders and rescues to be anything less.

We’re going to talk to our veterinarians, and learn to trust them. After all, they want our dogs to thrive.

We want to get our dogs out more. Moving, living their lives, being spoiled rotten. Snuggled up with us, running beside us, and being our faithful, healthy companion for as many days on Earth as we are given with them.

  • You Should Not Ignore the West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

You Should Not Ignore the West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

The West Paw Toppl Dog Toy is used for engagement and enrichment for dogs- but is it worth it?

    WPAWDOW051322 140 5000x 1

DO WEST PAW TOPPL INTERACTIVE TOYS KEEP DOGS ENTERTAINED?

Do West Paw Toppl interactive toys keep dogs entertained? That’s a puzzle. But we chew on the question and come up with this: it depends on the dog. Some dogs will go for anything that’s new, and others need to be coaxed with a treat. But all pups will eventually get bored with the same old toy, which is why it’s important to have a variety of puzzle, chew and treat toys on hand.

For my dogs, the answer is yes. Let’s dive into why and how.

Your Great Dane is Bored: Here’s 11 Fun Ways to Entertain Them.
5 Dog Boredom Busters: Keep Your Pup Cool!

WHAT STRUGGLES DID MY DOGS HAVE WITH DOG TOYS RELATED TO FOOD / ENGAGEMENT?

My dogs were either bored with previous toys like the Kong and left it alone, or they weren’t smart enough to get the food out quickly and left it all in there to melt.

I started to feel like I was spending all of this time making them Kong’s for my OWN ENGAGEMENT! The engagement activity was digging it all out in the sink just to get the Kong clean. It REALLY stinks to spend time, money and effort to fill up food puzzles for your dogs, just to spend 20 minutes then rinsing it all out– I felt like groundhogs day.

There were times when the food got stuck in the hole of the toy, and they were unable to get it out, leaving the Kong at risk of mold and mildew.

My dogs are bright! But they are NOT prey drive/driven by food/working dog breeds.

Food puzzles had become a big source of frustration for us. They were just maybe too lazy to use a Kong. I decided that the Kong was not for us anymore. It was just TOO MUCH WORK for me and NOT ENOUGH FULFILLMENT for them.

That is when I decided to try the West Paw Toppl, even though I was hesitant.

WHAT SIZES DO THE WEST PAW TOPPL COME IN?

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

The two sizes of the West Paw Toppl come in small, large and extra large. The three sizes are sold separately.

But, honestly no matter what size dog you have, the price for the two sizes are about the same (give or take a few bucks) and the large can be used for a small dog. Just simply put the Toppl back in the freezer after a few minutes and reuse later.

Or, buy the small / medium / large based on the size of your dog or puppy!

I personally have the size large West Paw dog toy and use it for both my 125 lb Great Dane and my 5 lb puppy.

WEST PAW TOPPL FOR BIGGER DOGS

If you have bigger dogs, definitely go for the Large size. The large toppl toy is not necessarily a ‘big’ dog toy, but its big enough for them to eat out of, which is my FAVORITE part about it

The biggest complaint I have with the Kong is that the hole at the top was too small for my giant breeds to eat from. They’d get bored, the stuff got stuck, they’d stop eating, it would get gross.. You get the point.

Getting the large sizes in the toppl treat allowed my pet to enjoy the toy almost immediately. It did take them some time to understand the toppl treat, but DEFINITELY not as long as it took them with any other food toy (which was nearly never- ha).

WEST PAW TOPPL FOR SMALLER DOGS

If you have a smaller dog, you can get the smaller toy.

The toppl comes in the small and large size. However, I do believe you can use the large toppl for small dogs.

HOW DO YOU USE THE WEST PAW TOPPL DOG TOY?

This treat toy is meant to fill with food and keep your dog busy.

Reasons you can use the topple treat:

    1. Hold treats for your dog to make them last longer
    2. Provide a healthy snack
    3. Fill with What is the Best Food for Dogs with Upset Stomach? The Top Home Remedies for Dog’s Diarrhea” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>food and top off with a few treats to provide mental engagement and enrichment
    4. Use it as a treat toy to help keep your dog’s brain busy and enriched
    5. Lessen anxiety
    6. Slow down your dog while eating

    FILLING THE TOPPL PUZZLE TOY

The topple treat toy has a more appropriate shape than other chew toys meant for filling up, in my opinion which allows their tongue to get in easier and allows for zero waste.

Just take the treat toy and fill it with either your dog’s favorite food, snack, some wet kibble, or canned food and then freeze.

You can use it as a dog toy / more for treats or you can also use it as a meal replacement.

COMPARING THE WEST PAW TOPPL TO A KONG TOY

A Kong treat toy never worked out for my Great Danes.

They like other treat dispensing toys and similar items, but with the Kong they seemed to get bored and not be able to get the items out. The hole seemed too small and ultimately just created more work for me.

Because of the way the toppl treat toy is made with the wide opening, they are able to more easily interact with both the small and large toppls. It seems more species appropriate than having them stick their tongue in such a small spot.

As an added bonus, the small and large toppls seem MUCH easier to clean. With others, I always worried that mold and grossness was going to start growing on the inside. But with these ones the hole is wide enough that I can clearly make sure that they are thoroughly cleaned aftewards.

CAN YOU USE THE WEST PAW TOPPL FOR FEEDING MEALS?

Absolutely! These are the only toys I use to regularly give my pups their meals.

I use wet food and mix it with water, stick it in the freezer and later let them enjoy!

You may not have a beautiful meal like you see on the internet, but who cares! Mine are never pretty- but they are delicious and healthy.

Something cool that is sold separately than the toppl treat are these adorable little additions for the clever dogs. If your dog is able to figure out how to use the toy immediately, you can make the job harder by adding this to the inner ridges and challenging them.

USING A WEST PAW TOPPL FOR ENGAGEMENT AND TREATS

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

Typically, I just use the West Paw toppl for mealtimes, but you can also use it for healthy treats.

Just fill up the toy with anything you’d like! Then, add bone broth or water to be able to freeze it all together before you feed (freezing will make it last much longer when you feed it!)

Ideas for things to add in:

    1. Cottage Cheese
    2. Apple Sauce
    3. Slices of Granny smith apple (My dogs LOVE Granny Smith apples for some reason!)
    4. Yogurt
    5. Peanut Butter
    6. Fish oil
    7. Cheese
    8. Mashed up fruit or vegetables
    9. Your own homemade dog food recipes
    10. Store-bought dog food
    11. Mashed banana

Whatever you can think of! Be creative- your pup will love it. ?

I have also found that using the wet food along with some kibble or dry treats works great too! The toppl treat dispensing toy is great for mental engagement and enrichment, especially if you dog is prone to anxiety or boredom. You can use it as a puzzle toy by filling it with their favorite treats

IS THE WEST PAW TOPPL DISHWASHER SAFE?

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

I have washed my West Paw toppl nearly 10 times and it is completely dishwasher safe!

The company states that you should use only the top rack dishwasher shelf in order to make sure it does not melt.

After dinner, I typically rinse it out to get any leftover gunk out, then stick it in the dishwasher. So yes, it is definitely dishwasher safe.

The only negative I have with the West Paw toppl treat dispensing toy is that it does not come in many different colors.

I wish there were more color options to choose from because right now it is only available in three colors- tangerine, neon green and aqua blue. I have one of each of these colors, but the primary color that I love is the aqua blue. But- keep in mind our dogs see colors in different ways than we do anyways- so the colors don’t bug them!

ARE THE WEST PAW TOPPL DOG TREAT TOYS CHEW PROOF?

I do not believe that the West Paw Toppl is chew proof.

However, you should consider that this is not a chew toy.

If your dog loves to chew things, you should monitor them while they eat their meal for your dog’s safety.

Moderate chewers could probably get away with it if they are just chewing it while they’re eating but direct chewing on the toy would likely damage it and could even cause an obstruction should they swallow it.

ARE THE WEST PAW TOPPL DOG CHEW TOYS SAFE?

    West Paw Toppl Dog Toy

Most animals love to eat but dog owners should monitor their dogs while they do so!

I do believe that the West Paw toppl is a more appropriate shape for animals not to get their tongues stuck inside while they are eating.

The material is also non toxic.

I have had zero concerns with my Great Dane’s safety while they use the items. My two suggestions would be:

    1. Always monitor your animals while they are eating for your dog’s safety
    2. Always read the labels of any items you include in their meals

If you have pets you know that finding a good way to keep them from getting bored is hard.

You dont always have time to play with them all day long.

Well, the Toppl Treat could be a great solution for you.

PLUG UP THE HOLE WITH PEANUT BUTTER

My first step is always to plug up the side hole with peanut butter. I’m talking about this hole:

I fill this up so that the rest of the items don’t come falling out once I start pouring them in. Mistake I’ve made the hard way many times.

CANNED DOG FOOD AND WATER WITH TREATS

Remember- your pet does not care if it looks like a masterpiece.

Just take canned food, stuff it in there, fill the rest with water, mix it together, and then add a few treats on top!

    Done…..

    Easy right?

    Don’t forget to freeze.

DEHYDRATED RAW OR REGULAR RAW WITH TREATS

You get the point… Do the same exact thing as above but with dehydrated raw or standard raw food!

I like to crumple up some dehydrated raw or balanced wet raw (We love Raws Paws) and then pour water over top of it. Sometimes I’ll add some veggies on top, then freeze.

    Raw Paws Pet Food

    They go crazy!

    WET KIBBLE

If you feed kibble- do the same exact thing but with kibble!

It really does not get easier than that!

WEST PAW’S PUZZLE TOY IS A GAME CHANGER

Enrichment For Dogs – 10 Ideas to Keep Your Dog Happy

Enrichment for dogs is SO important!

If you’re a dog owner, you know that your furry friend needs exercise, a healthy diet, and plenty of love and attention. But did you know that enrichment is also an important part of keeping your dog happy and healthy? In this blog post, we’ll discuss what dog enrichment is, why it’s important, and some easy ways to enrich your dog’s life.

    WHAT IS ENRICHMENT FOR DOGS?

Dog enrichment is anything that stimulates your dog’s mind or body in a positive way. Just like people, dogs need stimulation and variety in their lives to stay happy and healthy. Enrichment activities can include things like training, feeding puzzles, chew toys, interactive toys, scent work, and more.

WHY IS ENRICHMENT AND MENTAL STIMULATION SO IMPORTANT?

Enrichment is important for dogs because it prevents boredom, provides mental stimulation, strengthens the bond between you and your dog, and can help with problem behaviors. Dogs that are bored often turn to destructive behaviors like chewing furniture or digging holes in the yard. Providing enrichment activities can help keep your dog’s mind active and prevent these kinds of problem behaviors from developing.

Enrichment activities also provide an opportunity for you to bond with your dog. Training sessions are a great way to have quality time together while also teaching your dog useful skills. Feeding puzzles are another great way to bond with your dog while providing them with mental stimulation – plus, they’re a lot of fun!

EASY WAYS TO PROVIDE CANINE ENRICHMENT

There are lots of easy ways to add enrichment activities into your dog’s life. If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few ideas:

    1. Take your dog for a walk in a new place – different sights and smells will stimulate their senses and make for an exciting adventure!
    2. Buy or make a simple puzzle toy – there are tons of great options available online or at your local pet store. You can also easily make your own puzzle toy by putting some kibble or treats inside an empty water bottle or cardboard box.
    3. Sign up for a training class – training classes are a great way to bond with your dog while teaching them useful skills. Check out your local humane society or animal shelter for affordable class options in your area.
    4. Make homemade frozen treats – fill an ice cube tray with chicken broth or peanut butter mixed with some of your dog’s favorite kibbles for a simple and delicious treat that will keep them cool on hot summer days.

Make sure that your dog likes the treats or food that you stuff in the toy. Try different kinds of foods to see what your dog is motivated by.

You may be surprised at how much your dog will love a simple game of hide and seek with their favorite treats!

Ensuring that you are using something that your dog really enjoys will help increase the canine enrichment and keep the dog fully engaged.

YOUNG PUPPIES AND KEEPING YOUR DOG BUSY

Young puppies love physical exercise and canine enrichment!

There are an abundance of dog toys that are perfect for puppies including a snuffle mat, frozen toys, or chew toys.

Being intentional about keeping your dog engaged while they are young might even help to keep them out of trouble as dogs LOVE to keep busy and work hard.

PUPPY TOYS THAT PROVIDE CANINE ENRICHMENT

Dog toys are not all suitable for a puppy. A dog starts off learning everything they need to know about life, and that includes learning how to bite and chew.

Puppies love to explore the world with their mouths, and they will mouth anything they can get their teeth on including your fingers, toes, clothing, and basically anything else they can find.

That’s why it’s so important to choose the right kinds of puppy toys that will not only be safe for them to mouth and chew, but also provide enrichment and keep them mentally challenged.

Here are a few great puppy toy ideas:

    1. Chew toys: this could be anything from a Kong toy to a Nylabone to a rope toy. Just make sure it’s specifically designed for puppies and made of safe materials.
    2. Snuffle mat: a snuffle mat is a great way to keep your puppy’s mind challenged while they search for treats.
    3. Frozen toys: freezing a toy or treat is a great way to keep your puppy entertained and cool in the summer months.

Puppies need both physical and mental stimulation, so choose dog toys that will provide both. Canine enrichment doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, it just needs to be tailored to your individual dog.

SPENDING JUST A FEW MINUTES INVESTING IN YOUR DOG’S BRAIN

Canine enrichment activities can span anywhere from doing some training with toilet paper tubes and scent work, to dog sports to physical activity.

Here are a few simple ways to provide mental stimulation for your dog:

    1. Take them for walks in new places – different sights and smells will stimulate their senses and make for an exciting adventure!
    2. Buy or make a simple puzzle toy – there are tons of great options available online or at your local pet store. You

    DOG ENRICHMENT CLASSES

    Enrichment For Dogs

There are many different types of dog enrichment classes available, from obedience training to agility courses. Enrolling your dog in a class is a great way to provide them with mental stimulation, while also strengthening the bond between you and your furry friend.

Dog enrichment classes provide an opportunity for your dog to socialize with other dogs, learn new skills, and burn off some energy all at the same time.

DOGS LOVE TO USE THEIR BRAINS

Most dogs love physical activity, but it is true that dogs also love to use their brains. If your dog enjoys environmental enrichment, they will probably love a good engagement activity as well.

Enrichment activities for dogs can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. If you’re looking for something simple, start with some basic obedience training or a game of hide and seek. If you’re looking for something more challenging, try enrolling your dog in an agility course or a nose work class.

You don’t have to spend a ton of money or time on enrichment activities for your dog – the most important thing is that you are spending quality time with your furry friend.

    Play Doggie Search Games

This fun activity encourages calm behavior, and thoughtfulness, and can be done both indoors and out.

To play, simply hide your dog’s favorite treats or toys around the house or yard, and let them sniff them out! You can make it as easy or difficult as you like, depending on your dog’s age, size, and energy level.

For dogs that are becoming well-versed and scent and search games, you can try hiding their treats in different rooms, or even in different areas of the yard.

Here are some other search enrichment games that you can try:

    • Roll small treats up in a towel (your dog has to unroll the towel to get them out)
    • Put treats inside of an egg carton for your dog to unwrap. For dogs that make quick work of destroying things, up the difficulty level by wrapping it in gift wrap or butcher paper!
    • Use a muffin tin. Put a smelly treat in one of the cups. Then place tennis balls in all of the cups. Your dog has to use their nose to figure out which ball the treat is under!
    • Carnival game: hide a treat under one of three cups, and have your dog find it
    • Magic trick: hide your hands behind your back with a treat hidden in one fist. Show both fists to your dog. Encourage your dog to boop their nose or paw at the hand with the hidden treat, then reward!

As always, supervise your pet! If your dog tends to ingest things they shouldn’t, choose activities that are safer for them.

    Build a Canine Obstacle Course

A fun obstacle course can help your dog build confidence and strengthen its muscles.

You can create an obstacle course indoors when it’s hot out! If you’re short on space, no problem – you can set up a simple course with just a few items.

    Here’s how to get started:

First, choose the obstacles you want to include. Some ideas are:

-Hopping over things such as a broomstick on the floor

-Maneuvering in a ‘heel’ position, off-leash around balls, toys, and furniture

-Crawling under something (have the kids hold a broomstick up higher!)

-Walking along a line (use painter’s tape or washi tape on the floor)

-Jumping through a hoop (keep it low, don’t encourage high jumps)

-Placing ‘paws up’ on a small platform such as a step, a small trampoline, or a FitPaws balance pod

Now, put it all together! Start with the easiest obstacle first, and help your dog through each one. Lure them with a treat and encourage them to be slow and methodical.

As they master each obstacle, add in another until you have a full course!

As always, think safety first! Active, athletic, and agile dogs will be able to do more. Some dogs need gentle activities; be smart and know your dog!
