  • What I Put On My Dog’s Collar… Safety, Identification, Training, and Location Tracking

    CEL 2242

What I put on my dog’s collar isn’t just a style statement; it’s a full-on toolkit for their safety, ID, training, and even location tracking. Stick around as I spill the tea on what’s hanging around my pups’ necks and why it’s a game-changer.

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #1: Safety

Safety is the most important thing for our dogs, so it is important to me that I keep my dogs safe with the use of their collar.

What you put on your dog’s collar should be a matter of safety

    Safety matters!!!

E-Collar training keeps my dogs safe, so I use an e-collar as their ‘primary’ collar

When it comes to keeping my pups out of trouble, e-collar training is the unsung hero. It’s not just about behavior; it’s a safety net. The seamless integration of e-collar features ensures that my dogs not only learn the ropes but stay out of harm’s way. These e-collar safety features are a game-changer in responsible pet parenting, providing a balance between training and protection.

While going on a standard leash walk, my dogs will wear their regular leash collar as well as their ‘decked out’ e collar. The leash is attached to their regular collar. Never attach a leash to an e collar.

My dogs cannot be safe unless I know where they are! Therefore, I use GPS (Apple Tag) as a digital guardian

Enter the GPS revolution with the Apple AirTag – my digital guardian for those unpredictable adventures. With GPS tracking for pets, I can breathe easy knowing that even if my psycho dogs decide to embark on an impromptu adventure, I can swiftly locate them. This technology isn’t just a convenience; it’s a peace of mind for any dog parent who’s had a moment of panic when their pup went off the grid.

See more later on which air-tag holders I use and which I do NOT recommend using.

Keeping identification on your dog can keep them safe in the long run

Identification is a cornerstone of safety, and my dog’s collar is a walking ID card. With multiple contact numbers on the tags, engraved details, and crucial medical information, it’s like a fail-safe system. Should my adventurous pup find themselves in a tricky situation, anyone who lends a helping hand has all the necessary info to reunite us.

Using the Quick Snap for Emergency Situations

And here’s the ace up my sleeve – the quick snap on the e-collar band. This nifty feature isn’t just about easy on-and-off during training sessions; it’s a potential lifesaver. If my dog ever gets stuck or faces a choking hazard, that quick snap allows me to free them in seconds. It’s a small detail with a big impact, adding an extra layer to the safety dance of responsible dog ownership.

The quick snap collar from e-collar technology looks like this:

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #2: Identification

Identification is an obviously important part of your dog’s collar. I have personally found several lost dogs and the very first thing I do is look for an identification tag so that I can try to get ahold of the dog’s owner! There are several different ways of adding an identification tag onto the dog’s collar and none of these are necessarily ‘right’ or ‘wrong… But, here is what my opinions are!

    good dog gmhfy9 jpg

Always put multiple phone numbers on the dog’s identification tag

Having multiple contact numbers on their tags is a golden rule. It’s like a backup plan – just in case one of us is unreachable, there’s always another lifeline. These dog collar safety features go beyond just looking good; they’re a practical way to make sure someone can reach us if our pups decide to embark on an unplanned adventure.

Jangling or sound proof, do you care if your dog’s identification tag makes noise?

Now, let’s talk about the tag jangle – some pups don’t mind it, while others act like they’re auditioning for a percussion band. It’s all about personal preference. Likewise, some owners don’t seem to mind it, while the ‘jangling’ noise tends to drive me crazy!

If you’re on Team “Silence is Golden,” you might want to consider a soundproof tag. Balancing stylish and functional dog collars means taking into account the little details that make a big difference in your pup’s comfort and your sanity.

    The worst ‘soundproof’ tag

Getting a tag for your dog that is soundproof is useless if that said tag breaks within 1 day. Then you really won’t be able to hear it! These are the ‘soundproof’ dog collar tags that I have personally tried and found useless because they break off within a few weeks and I never see them again.

    DO NOT BUY THESE TAGS!!!

    The best ‘soundproof’ tag

The best soundproof tag I have ever used, and the one I personally use, is made from metal and not sillicone. Maybe your dogs do not wrestle or roughhouse, but the second mine do the sillicone ones fall off. So, I look for a tag that does NOT hang, but also will NOT break. This tag has never fallen off and always remains secure around my e collar band.

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY BUY THIS TAG! (SHOP HERE)

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Put medical information on your dog’s tag, if they need medicine or have any conditions

For those extra layers of safety, tossing in some medical information on the tag is a smart move. If your furball has any special needs or conditions, having it right there on the collar is like a note to anyone who lends a helping hand. It’s one of those dog collar identification tips that can make all the difference in a crucial moment.

Put a return address on your dog’s collar – home sweet home

And of course, let’s not forget the good old return address. If our mischievous pals decide to go on a solo mission, having an address on their collar ensures they find their way back home. It’s not just about safety; it’s about peace of mind, knowing that if they get lost, someone kind will guide them back to us.

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #3: Training

Being able to train my dogs and communicate with them with the use of their collar is huge. Their collar is not just ‘dead-weight’ but its actually a tool that we can use to bond and grow closer in our relationship. They get to explore the world because of the tools on their collar!

Which band do I use? Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of my doggy training arsenal.

The star of the show? The 3/4″ Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar – an absolute game-changer for convenient e-collar training. Why? The Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar has an easy-on, easy-off design, thanks to the quick snap feature which helps so much for off-leash dog safety. No more wrestling with collars; it’s a breeze.

Plus, the fashion-forward part – it comes in Black, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Teal, and Yellow. Stylish and functional – my kind of combo.

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Which device do I use? The 900 Series

Curious about the wizardry behind the scenes?

I pair that chic Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar with the EZ-904 2T 4-Dog Easy Educator. Four dogs might sound like chaos, but with this setup, it’s a breeze.

Each button on the remote (and there are four: red, yellow, orange, and red again) corresponds to one of my dogs’ colors. It’s like a high-tech doggy rainbow, making remote control dog training a walk in the park.

Why do I e collar train?

Now, let’s talk about the real magic – e-collar training. It’s not just about teaching your pup to sit and stay; it’s a lifeline for off-leash adventures. Off-leash dog safety is paramount, and e-collar training gives me the confidence that my dogs will come running back when I call. It’s like having a conversation with them, a silent understanding that keeps them safe and happy. While you’re at it, check out these hilarious (not really that funny) off leash fails….

Here are some more e-collar resources if you are interested!

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #4: GPS Location

If you have off leash dogs, lets face it you need to have some form of GPS tracking device on their collar. It’s for peace of mind but also hugely important for that ‘what if’ of them getting lost or you losing track of them momentarily. Let’s chat about GPS tracking and how it might just be the game-changer we didn’t know we needed for our chaos-makers. I have tried MANY and have also LOST many…. so I know the pain.

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Using an Apple AirTag to Track My Dogs Location

There are hundreds (probably) of fancy tracking devices out there for our dogs, but my favorite is the Apple Airtag. (call me boring!)

When it comes to ensuring the safety and whereabouts of my off-leash adventurers, the Apple AirTag emerges as a cornerstone of dog collar safety features. The airtag does not faulty in its ability to track my dogs, and it works basically the exact same as the fancy expensive ones that require a subscription, although it does NOT do the fun/fancy thingsl ike track their health/sleep, steps.

Functioning like a digital leash, this ingenious device provides the peace of mind that, even in their wanderlust moments, I can effortlessly track down my pups with just a few taps on my phone.

Plus, air-tags are pretty affordable. They are about $90 for 4 of them and you don’t have to have a subscription. You can look at the listing on amazon here:

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Major downside of using an apple air-tag: I lose them all the time

One major downside of using an apple airtag to help me not lose my dogs is… well, I lose my apple airtags. My dogs play hard and I noticed the airtag holders continually fell off, broke, and we’d lose the airtags. Although you may be asking ‘why can’t you just track the airtag and go find it?’… We did! However, in open fields with tall grass, the airtag would be leading me to the general location of my DOG but it can be tough to trace down a tiny airtag. Also, the airtags DO die after awhile. Once, someone also STOLE a lost airtag of mine (so that was fun)…

In other words, if you are using an apple airtag, take it from me, and do NOT buy the following airtag-holders because they will break and fall off of your dog’s collar and you may never recover them.

Do not use the following airtag holders – they will break!!!

YES… Do buy this airtag holder – it WORKS!

This is the airtag holder that I DO recommend! And the ONLY one!!! Enter the IPX8 Waterproof AirTag Dog Collar Holder – the unsung hero of AirTag security for pets.

This ultra-durable accessory not only fits snugly on all widths of collars but also comes in a convenient 4-pack. (Well, for us crazy people who have 4 dogs)

Seamlessly attaching to the e-collar band is easy because the e collar bands have pre-made holes for easy installation. And better than that, you won’t lose it and have to buy new holders/air-tags every few weeks/months. You can find it here.

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

What I Put On My Dogs Collar – Summary

In a nutshell, what I put on my dogs’ collars goes beyond just a simple collar. I have the band from e-collar tech, the device from e-collar tech, a soundproof and reliable form of identification, the apple airtag with the reliable means of holding it (which won’t fall off) and have thought through the inclusion of safety features like the quick snap on the e-collar band ensures swift removal in potential choking hazards.

While GPS tracking, notably through the Apple AirTag, provides an extra layer of security for off-leash adventures, the identification game is strong with multiple contact numbers, medical information, and a return address on their tags.

Training is a breeze with the easy-on, easy-off design of the 3/4″ Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar, coupled with the convenience of color-coded remote control for multiple dogs. Finally, the waterproof and secure IPX8 AirTag holder takes the worry out of losing tags during aquatic escapades. It’s a comprehensive approach, blending style and functionality for a well-rounded canine care strategy.

As an influencer, blogger, and devoted dog lover, I’ve always believed in using my platform to make a positive impact on the world, especially when it comes to innocent dogs.

Dogs hold a special place in my heart, and I’ve made it my mission to contribute to their betterment in any way I can. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to team up with Jolly Pets, a brand known for its dedication to creating durable and enjoyable dog toys. Together, we embarked on a heartwarming journey to bring joy to the dogs at the Denver Animal Shelter.

Jolly Pets has long been a name synonymous with high-quality and durable dog toys. Their commitment to creating products that enrich pets’ lives aligns perfectly with my own values.

Founded in 1994 as a subsidiary of Horsemen’s Pride, Inc., Jolly Pets started its journey with the iconic Jolly Ball for equine use. The success of this product paved the way for their expansion into the world of canine companions, and their focus on durability and creativity made them a go-to brand for dog lovers everywhere.

Denver Animal Shelter: A Haven for Lost and Abandoned Pets

The Denver Animal Shelter stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of lost and abandoned pets each year. Their mission aligns with mine – to protect, care for, and advocate for animals in need. By providing humane care, reuniting lost pets with their families, facilitating adoptions, and enforcing animal ordinances, they play a crucial role in creating a better future for Denver’s animals and residents.

Making a Difference: My Time as a Volunteer at the Denver Animal Shelter

My journey as a volunteer at the Denver Animal Shelter has been a profoundly rewarding experience that has touched my heart in ways I could never have imagined.

Stepping into the shelter, I found myself immersed in a world of compassion, resilience, and hope.

    Making Shelter Dogs Happy

One dog stares out of her temporary home at the animal shelter and looks at me with sweet eyes.

Each day spent working alongside the dedicated shelter staff and interacting with the incredible dogs has reinforced my belief in the power of small acts of kindness to make a significant impact.

Whether it’s walking dogs, cleaning up the dogs or their cages, or simply spending time offering comfort and companionship, every moment spent as a volunteer has deepened my connection to the cause and strengthened my commitment to being a voice for the voiceless.

Through this experience, I’ve come to understand that volunteering is not just about giving time – it’s about sharing love, making connections, and being a part of a community that is dedicated to creating a brighter future for every animal that enters the shelter’s doors.

Jolly Pets Toys: Get To Know Each of Our Favs

Jolly Pets has a variety of toys that are known for being indestructible and great for chewers. Although there are quite a few toys, I’m just gonna tell you about our (well my dogs) favorites.

    The Tug-n-Toss

Imagine this: you give it a good toss, and boom! It’s off, soaring through the air like a furry missile. The coolest part? You don’t need to fumble with any inflation nonsense – it’s all set to create a whirlwind of excitement both on the ground and in the water. And oh, did I mention the handle? It’s not just for looks – it makes the retrieval game a total cakewalk, even when your four-legged buddy insists on holding onto it with all their might.

And guess what, it’s proudly made right here in the good ol’ USA! When it comes to the chase, trust me, the Tug-n-Toss doesn’t mess around. It’s like a personal trainer for your dog, giving them a workout that’ll have them snoozing in no time. But hey, it’s not just about running – this bad boy is perfect for water play too.

And here’s the cherry on top – it’s scented! The Light Blue one smells like a basket of blueberries, and the Orange? Well, it’s like a mini-vanilla heaven. But hey, let’s remember, no toy is totally indestructible. While we design these to last, always keep an eye out when your furball is having a blast. And if anything starts looking wonky, loose, or vanishes altogether, it’s time to give that toy a respectful send-off. Safety first, right!

    The Romp n Roll

This toy is kind of like the MVP of your pup’s playtime, a true jack-of-all-trades.

Seriously, it’s like the Swiss Army knife of dog toys. Want to give it a good kick? Go for it. Feel like a game of tug-of-war? It’s your pup’s new partner in crime. Throwing, carrying, launching – this ball is up for it all. But wait, there’s more – it floats, even if your pup gets a little overenthusiastic and gives it a puncture. How cool is that?

You can also play with this one in the water too, which my pups LOVE!

By joining forces with Jolly Pets, I was able to amplify my efforts and make a tangible difference in the lives of shelter dogs. Together, we shared a common goal: to spread joy and enhance the well-being of dogs.

What is the Best Dog Food Container? The Top 10 Things to Look for When Trying to Store Dry Dog Food

Finding a dog food storage container for your pet food can be harder than you think. You want something that is easy to clean and looks stylish, while also being secure enough to keep your pet’s food fresh. After doing a lot of research on dog food storage containers, we have compiled the best options available on the market today.

What is the Best Dog Food Container

Storage containers come in all sorts of different sizes and structures, so we identified some of the top things to look for and to avoid when finding a pet food container.

What is the best dog food container? Top things to look for to store dry dog food.

When looking for a pet food container to keep dog food inside, you may just grab plastic bins and call it a day. However, after further research we found that storing food in some standard food storage containers can be problematic for dry dog food.

So, we identified a list of the top 10 things to look for in a pet food container or for dog treats.

    1. The right size: Decide ahead of time exactly how much food you are going to want to store in the food container. Shopping on Amazon can be deceptive and you might think you are buying a large container but when it shows up you can barely fit any food inside.
    2. Airtight seal: Without an airtight food storage container your dog food storage can let in air and expose the dry food to certain elements like humidity which can cause the food to go stale.
    3. Easy Cleaning: Believe it or not, plastic containers can develop mold over time when storing an entire bag of dog food. It is important that the container you choose is easily cleanable and washable.
    4. BPA-free: BPA is a chemical used in most plastics and it can leach into your dog’s food, so make sure that the storage container you choose is completely BPA free. BPA Free Plastic is the way to go if you are going for a plastic container.
    5. Durable material: The best dog food containers will not only keep your dog’s kibble fresh, but also the material itself will last over time.
    6. Material: The material you choose is ultimately up to you. You can get dog food storage containers in stainless steel, thick plastic, or glass. We will discuss the different materials that you can use for dog food storage.
    7. Lock Tight Handle: Make sure that the dog food storage containers that you choose comes with a lock tight handle. This will help keep a tight seal on the food storage, preventing any pests from entering.
    8. Design: The container should look stylish and modern, but also be functional for your pup’s food needs.
    9. Affordability: Nobody wants to spend hundreds of dollars just to store dry food for their animals, so affordability was important, especially for those who have multiple pets.
    10. Convenience: Whether you prefer pouring food directly from the plastic container or using a food scoop, the food container must have ease of use when feeding your dog. After all, you do feed your dogs multiple times a day and with a multi pet household it cannot be a process that is time-consuming or lingering.

Let’s jump in to some of the reasons why these are the top 10 things to look for in a pet food container and why it’s important that you get the best dog food container for your pup.

The Right Size Food Container Makes a Huge Difference

The right size: You will want to make sure that whatever you buy is capable of holding all of the dry food that you need for your pup.

Food storage containers come in all different sizes that can all store dry food.

Depending on if you have large dogs or small dogs, you may want to get a large food storage bin to keep in the laundry room or closet, and a smaller container to keep in the pantry. When the small container runs out of food, simply refill it with how much kibble can fit. The smaller food container will, perhaps, hold enough food for about 4 days to 1 week, but it will be easy enough to refill.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of refilling the small container, you can also get a larger one that will hold enough food to last an entire month or more. That way, you won’t have to worry about refilling it as often.

Here is an example of a smaller size dog food storage container:

And here is an example of larger size food containers which could store the entire bag of your dog’s kibble:

Food / Meal Prep in Food Storage Containers

Some people like to sort out the serving size of their dog’s meals on the weekend when they have additional time.

These are my favorite food storage containers that do just that. They come in bulk off of Amazon and are suitable for storing all of your dog’s weekly meals ahead of time so that you don’t have to measure and serve in the morning rush when you are busy.

    Airtight Seals are Essential

Airtight seals: Keeping the unwanted air out of the dog food is paramount in order to prevent spoilage, mold growth and infestation of bugs. The best dog food storage containers will come with an airtight seal to ensure that your pup’s kibble stays fresh for as long as possible.

How to tell if your dog food storage is airtight:

You can tell if the dog food storage is actually an airtight food storage container by checking the seal around the lid. If the container has multiple layers of seals, then it is most likely airtight.

    The Vault

‘The Vault’ is a very popular airtight container. People really like this airtight food storage container because:

    1. They are stackable containers so you can use multiple for different dogs or different food
    2. They come in different sizes
    3. Obviously, it is an airtight container
    4. The plastic is BPA Free (More on bpa free plastic later)

Easy to Clean and Keep Sanitary

As a pet owner, you know that keeping your pup’s environment clean can be tricky at times. This also applies to their food containers.

Dog food storage can get gross very quickly.

As a matter of fact, it is recommended not to dump the entire food bag straight into the food containers. In some cases, it has been shown that food poured directly into dog food storage containers can actually spoil faster and even grow mold at the bottom of the bin.

    Washable / Cleanable Features

You will want to look for storage containers that have a lid which can be easily detached and washed in the sink or dishwasher. This will make it easier to keep your pup’s food container clean and sanitized, thus keeping their dry food fresher for longer periods of time.

    Create a Cleaning Routine

Make a cleaning routine for your storage container. If you don’t plan and schedule to clean your pet food storage on a certain routine, it might not get done. When the dog food is nearly empty, it is a good idea to completely empty the dog food storage containers and rinse them out with some soap and water.

    Removable Inner Bucket

Some find it easier to keep a dog food storage container clean when it comes with a removable plastic bucket. That way, you can just remove the plastic liner from the storage container and rinse that part without having to wash the entire storage container.

Here is an example of a pet food storage container that is easily cleanable with an airtight seal:

    BPA Free

Making sure your dog food container is BPA Free is important.

Whether you are storing fresh food, dry food, pet food or human food, having food grade plastic will help to keep your pet’s food safe and healthy.

BPA stands for Bisphenol A, which is a chemical compound commonly used in plastic products. The problem is that this substance has been linked to health issues such as cancer and hormonal disruptions.

By making sure the plastic your pet food storage container is made of is BPA Free, you can rest assured that your pet food is not being exposed to any potentially harmful chemicals.

Along with getting a dog food storage container with safe and toxic-free plastic, you can also get water bowls that are BPA-free as well:

    Durable Dog Food Storage Container

Durability matters in what dog food container you choose. You can get what you think is the best pet food storage container, but if it only lasts a month before it breaks, you’re going to need to keep buying new ones.

If you want a container that will last, look for one that is made with thick plastic materials and has sturdy seals around the lids. This will help ensure your pup’s food stays fresh and secure in the container even if it accidentally gets tipped over or dropped.

Storing Dog Food in Stainless Steel Containers

Some people prefer their storage container to be stainless steel rather than food-grade plastic, and that is fine.

The Simplehuman Pet Food Storage is one of the most popular dog food containers. It stores up to 35 Liters of your pet’s food and comes in a stainless steel container.

The price is higher than a plastic dog food storage container, but the durability is much higher.

Material of Your Pet Food Storage

Speaking of stainless steel, that brings us to discussing what material you’d like to store your pet food in.

As with any typical storage container, your dog’s food has options of what it can be stored in.

You can store your dog’s food in stainless steel material, food-grade plastic, or even glass.

The material you choose will depend on your preferences and budget.

    Stainless Steel Pros and Cons

If you are looking for something durable and long-lasting, then stainless steel might be best for you. However, you are going to spend more money on stainless steel than you would on cheaper alternatives of food containers.

Some pet parents notice their dogs get ‘puppy or dog acne’ when they interact with certain plastics, and therefore opt for a steel or ceramic option.

Others prefer the aesthetic of a steel option, such as this one:

Plastic Food Containers Pros and Cons

However, if you’re just looking for a low-cost option that will keep food fresh in the short term, then a food-grade plastic storage container works fine for pet food storage.

As long as your dog’s food stays fresh, you don’t have to feel bad opting for plastic as a dog food container.

There are a ton of great options for plastic pet food storage that look great as well, like these:

    Lock Tight Handle

No matter what material you choose for your pet food storage, make sure that it comes with a lock tight handle.

The last thing you want is rodents or insects getting into the pet food storage container, or your pet accidentally (or purposefully) tipping it over and spilling food out.

A lock-tight handle will keep the lid on securely and help ensure that the storage container stays in place even if it gets bumped or dropped.

The best dog food storage will keep the dog’s food safe from ALL animals, including your dog AND unwanted animals.

These dog food containers, for example, have container features that completely lock up so that no other creature can get to the food.

    Choosing Your Favorite Design

Dog food containers don’t HAVE to be ugly. Although I opt to stick my dog food containers in the closet, some of the best dog food storage CAN be functional and pretty.

Try to decide whether you’d like to store the dog food containers away in a closet or on your kitchen counter as a part of your home decorations, and go from there.

    Functional (But not so pretty)

If you opt for a functional and not-so-beautiful pet food storage container, you may go for something like the Van Ness Food Container, found here:

Pretty (But maybe a bit less functional)

Alternatively, if you want something to compliment your house design, you may opt for something like this. You can also find something to store dog food that comes with a matching bin for storing treats, which is always fun.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you and what type of design you prefer for your pet food storage container.

You’ll want to ensure that whatever pet food storage you choose, it is durable and long-lasting, and comes with a secure locking handle.

Affordability – Ain’t Nobody Got Money for That

Nobody wants to spend all of their money to store dog food. We know you’d rather spend your money on taking your dog for a Pup-Cup or getting them a nice new bed.

We found several dog food storage options that are stylish, functional and affordable.

Take a look at this one, which is one of the options I have used regularly with my dogs:

I would give this one the following scores:

    1. Durability: B- (Easily cracks, but you get what you pay for)
    2. Affordability: A
    3. Style/Design: B- (Nothing beautiful)
    4. Airtight Seal: A (Nothing going in or out)
    5. Keeps Food Fresh: A (Does its job)
    6. Large: A (Depending on how much food you like to keep on hand, this one stores an entire 25 lb bag)
    7. Convenience: A (I mean unless you’re a super lazy person, which would be hard to beat me- this is really easy…)

    Overall- pretty good option.

Convenience – I don’t want to work hard to feed my dogs!

Lastly, everyone wants it to be easy to grab their dog’s food.

I don’t want to wrestle with my dog’s food container every time I have to feed them, and I’m sure you don’t either.

So, finding a convenient option is a must.

Overall, I think the Gamma2 Vittles Vault ranks highest on Amazon for ease of use (and other items too).

Seems if you’re a lazy person (like me) with a bit of an extra budget to spend on durability, than the Gamma2 Vittles Vault may be a great option for you.

    Dog Proof Your Christmas Tree

The Holiday season is upon us, and if you have a Great Dane or especially a puppy, you may be worried about how to dog proof your Christmas tree.

I don’t know about you, but the idea of Fido knocking over my beautiful decorations (and no doubt crushing some ornaments in the process) does NOT appeal to me!!! It is rather odd that we bring live trees into our home. They look beautiful to us, but to our dog, they smell interesting and look like something that needs to be peed on, chewed on, or destroyed.

    Block the Christmas Tree

Sometimes, the best and easiest way to keep your dog away from the Christmas tree is to literally build a fence around it.

We’ve heard through the grapevine that Great Dane owners have tried everything from blocking it with vacuum cleaners (oooh, scary!) to surrounding it with chairs.

A much better solution is available that can also be used for a million other things, too (like keeping your Great Dane out of the kitchen!).

Enter the Amazon Basics Dog Pet System, which is 42″ tall (get the largest size!) and can be placed around your Christmas tree to keep your dog from well…making a mess.

This solution is especially great for dogs that like to knock things over, unwrap presents, and remove ornaments from the tree, too!

Train Your Dog to Leave the Christmas Tree Alone

Of course, all of the above solutions might take away from the Holiday magic of a beautiful tree and decorations in your home.

Enter…training. I know, I know – this one does take a little bit of effort but it’s well worth it!

There are two commands that help with keeping dogs away from the Christmas tree (and the Christmas cookies, and the presents…).

    Those two commands are:

    Leave it

    Place

First, you are going to teach your Great Dane “LEAVE IT”, ideally before the tree comes into your home.

    22

How to Teach “LEAVE-IT” to Great Danes

Hold 3-4 high-value treats in your hand. Allow your dog to sniff your hand but NOT to access the treats. As soon as your dog gets annoyed and moves its nose away from your hand, say “YES” and offer a treat (not from your hand, from a treat pouch).

Now, open your hand with the treats in it, and as soon as your dog lunges to grab them, snap your hand shut.

Wait, once again, for your dog to turn its head away from your hand, then mark with a “YES” and reward the behavior with a treat.

Repeat this process until your dog figures out (usually pretty quickly) that they are rewarded when the leave the treats in your hand (even when your hand is open)!

With practice, you can begin to say “LEAVE IT” and your dog will immediately look you, instead, because “Leave it” and ignoring high-value things results in treats and praise! Start teaching this behavior NOW so that you can apply it to the Christmas Tree.

Here is a great Youtube video on how to teach a dog to Leave It. Kikopup is a fantastic dog trainer and one to follow! You can follow Kikopup HERE.

How to Teach “PLACE” to a Great Dane

Now that you can ask your dog to “LEAVE IT” when they approach the tree, you can also install a fail-proof system where your dog lays down on a mat and doesn’t get up until you tell them that they can.

I believe that all Great Danes should know the “PLACE” command. This way, your dog isn’t bugging the tree when you aren’t there to supervise.

Here is a great video from Kikopup on how to teach the “PLACE” or “BED” command.

How to Stop a Dog from Peeing on the Christmas Tree

Of course, you can do all of these things and still have problems with a dog that wants to pee on the Christmas tree.

The STOP MARKING spray from Skout’s Honor is a natural solution that, when paired with training, management, and perhaps even belly bands can keep your dog from marking its territory.

(Some people have asked, and yes, dogs will mark artificial Christmas trees as well, not just real ones!)

These Christmas-themed dog Belly Bands come in Great Dane sizes, are washable, and can make marking less satisfying for your male dog, too.

How to Puppy Proof your Christmas Tree

Puppies are, of course, a whole other ballgame.

All of the above solutions will be helpful, with one major additional pro tip.

Allow your puppy to sniff and explore the tree, but make sure that having it in the home is no big deal and seems like just part of your routine! When you lead your young and impressionable puppy this way, they may learn that the tree is just another thing in the environment to ignore.

Puppies are, however, curious and tenacious creatures and in some ways, the Christmas tree may be unsafe for them! They can knock it over or take ornaments off the bottom that are dangerous for them.

You can always make it a point to only decorate the top half of your tree! This way, your puppy cannot grab any ornaments and run. Always supervise your puppy around the Christmas tree!

COLLAPSIBLE BOWLS: FOOD AND WATER BOWLS

The last thing that pet parents should worry about with pet travel is how to conveniently feed their dogs.

Some pet parents like these traditional pet travel bowls for their pup, which are easy to store and clean:

My favorite travel / vacation food and water dispenser for dogs, however, is the Pupflask. The pupflask was a HUGE win for me and my dog while we traveled across the country because its:

    1. Large
    2. Sanitary
    3. Affordable
    4. Can be used for both food and water

You just take the cap off of the water bottle and can fill the lid with either food OR water. It worked GREAT!

    COLLARS AND LEASHES

Dogs, obviously, always need a leash and collar, but travel raises extra concerns about bringing along a leash and a collar for your pet.

Why is Leash Training Dogs So Dang Hard? 8 Things I Learned About Leash Training

Some spooked or anxious dogs are more prone to running away, and it is the last thing any pet parent wants for their pets to get lost in an unknown city or while they are on vacation. So, for that reason it is always recommended to pack an extra leash and extra collar for your dogs just incase you leave home one of them or lose one.

    PET TRAVEL LEASH

This pet travel leash is an awesome idea to keep on hand for your dog. You may not want to use it at all times, but with how tiny it is its a great option to keep in the car without taking up too much space.

    DOG ANXIOUS IN CAR?

CARGO LINER FOR YOUR DOG FOR THE BACK SEAT

A cargo liner is another great way to keep your car clean when traveling with your dog. It’s basically a giant sheet of plastic that you put down in the back of your SUV or hatchback to protect the area from dirt, hair, and water.

I have this one and it’s been a lifesaver:

    BIG BARKER SUV BED

The Big Barker SUV bed is on the top of my packing list because my dogs love it and love being comfortable and secure in the car. If your dog gets at all anxious in the car, they will love being secure in the Big Barker bed, which provides them with some safety and security from falling or rolling around in the back seat.

    TREATS AND BONES

If your pet is anything like mine, they probably get bored pretty easily. Dogs are meant to be engaged mentally, just like humans. If you have an active dog, especially, you’re going to want to intentionally think through some treats and bones that are clean, healthy and sanitary for both your whole family and your dog. Bully Sticks are a great option as they are safe and longlasting.

    CLEANING SUPPLIES FOR PET MESSES

Let’s face it, pets are very messy, so make it a priority to add cleaning items on your pet travel essentials list. It will make everyone more comfortable and happy to feel clean and sanitary on the trip, including your pet!

DID YOU KNOW THAT DIRT IS GOOD FOR YOUR DOG? (JUST NOT IN YOUR CAR!)

    PET WIPES

Try to opt for pet wipes instead of paper towels as it’ll be nice to be able to use something that is wet to wipe up messes.

Be careful not to use Clorox wipes or anything with chemicals in them that can cause your dog toxicity.

    My personal favorite are here:

    MUDBUSTER FOR CLEAN PAWS

If you’re on the road with your dog, you do not want them to be climbing back into your car with muddy paws.

That is one of the reasons we love the MUDBUSTER, which is a tool used to keep dog paws clean.

You will just need this item, and some clean water.

    FOOD ON THE GO

Feeding a dog is hard enough without being on the road. Opting for easy food is an absolute must when traveling with dogs.

The positive is that there are options to easily feed your dogs on the go, like dehydrated foods where you just have to add water.

Our favorite is, of course, Dr. Harveys! Here is a great blend of Dehydrated raw beef that you can add water to, which makes travel healthy while also convenient:

If you plan to stay somewhere for an extended period of time, be sure to pack your dog’s supplements so that their digestion doesn’t get altered while you are gone.

PAPERWORK: UP TO DATE VACCINATION RECORDS, UPDATED ID TAGS, VETERINARIAN CELL PHONE NUMBER, PET FRIENDLY HOTELS AND MORE

Lastly, it is easy to forget the ‘boring’ items such as vaccination records, ID tags, important cellphone numbers and a list of pet friendly places/people you may need.

    1. Always keep vaccination records on hand because you never know when you may need them.
    2. Don’t leave your home or town without updated ID tags.
    3. Bring along not only your own Veterinarian’s phone number, but do some research for local veterinarians offices and Emergency Clinics in whichever town you are heading to.
    4. Do your due diligence ahead of time to find pet friendly hotels to stay at.
    Dog Road Trip Essentials

Now that you know what to pack for your dog on a road trip, you can hit the open road with confidence! Just remember to bring plenty of food and water, stop often for potty breaks, and never leave your pet in the car alone. With a little planning, you and your furry friend will have the time of your lives
