    Next Level Dog Food Review

Next Level dog food hit the market hard in 2023 and seemed to gain traction around the same time as the massive and unprecedented Victor recall. Amid concerns over Victor’s recall due to salmonella contamination, numerous pet owners have sought a trustworthy alternative to replace their former choice.

Next Level pet food is reportedly owned and manufactured by the people who originally started Victor Pet Food, which explains why those who have traditionally loved Victor’s brand are drawn to it.

All About Next Level Dog Food

I look beyond marketing terms, popularity, and influencer content when evaluating pet food companies. Pet owners must evaluate where their pet’s food is manufactured, who formulated it, and how it may or may not be the safest and most nutritious choice. Read on to learn more about this emerging brand.

    Who Owns Next Level?

Scott Glover and Antoine Albin are the brains behind the Next Level dog food brand, which operates under U.S. Pet Food LLC. Interestingly, they were previously behind the successful venture of Victor Pet Food until they sold the brand to Mid-America.

With their non-compete agreement now expired, Glover and Albin wasted no time launching Next Level. This new brand has likely been in the works for years, leading to this moment.

Who Formulates Next Level Pet Food?

Many Next Level dog food formulas are similar to those Victor offers, right down to the ingredient lists. While there are minor differences, Next Level is seriously twinning with Victor.

Next Level claims their foods, including their proprietary VX Advantage™, were formulated by working “closely with an expert nutrition team.

Allow me to translate this for you. Next Level does NOT have a qualified nutritionist on staff. They have an unclear relationship with consultants whose credentials, experience, and ongoing affiliation with Next Level are unknown.

Because so many of the formulas mirror what we see from Victor, their former brand, it’s possible that they tweaked existing recipes and had a consultant sign off on them.

Further, there is no sign that these new recipes have been tested or proven long-term or in basic AFFCO feeding trials.

    What is VX Advantage™?

VX Advantage™ is a “proprietary vitamins, nutrients, and prebiotics blend.” The company leverages this for marketing purposes. However, the truth is that all companies use a propriety blend of vitamins, minerals, and supplements for joint and gut support.

There is nothing special or unusual about this, and no clinical data to support that their particular mix, which they’ve given a fancy name, is superior.

    2 4

Where is Next Level Pet Food Made?

Next Level makes its food in an owned facility in Texas.

This sets them a step ahead of the thousands of other pet food brands whose foods are manufactured and distributed by large contract facilities.

When a pet food company owns its facilities, it puts it in full control of its quality and manufacturing practices. This is very positive for companies fully dedicated to creating safe, nutritious, and clean products.

For companies willing to cut corners, it’s not. (See: Victor Salmonella Recall 2023) . Because Next Level is still very new to the market, we don’t know what their company culture is and how clean their plants are. It will take time for them to prove themselves.

The factory has no certifications (as of this publication) for safety and food sanitation, and without a much-established history, we have no idea how good their testing protocols are. That doesn’t mean they have a dirty plant, but there is little proof yet that they have a clean one.

Has Next Level Ever Had a Recall?

As of the time of this writing in early 2024, Next Level pet food has never had a recall.

However, it is a very new company and hasn’t had time to make a mistake.

While they appear to be taking the correct steps, comparing them to brands feeding millions of dogs (for decades) is unfair.

For perspective, people have often applauded Victor for never having had a recall. That seemed positive until we all learned they had been selling bacteria-contaminated food for nearly a year (if not longer)—their history of “no-recalls” ended in one of the most unprecedented recalls in pet food history.

To put this more simply, pet owners would be smart to look at companies’ overall manufacturing and formulation practices before choosing them simply because they’d not yet had a recall.

    5 2

Is Next Level Pet Food Like Victor Pet Food?

Many pet owners claim Next Level pet food is similar to the “old” Victor formulas before Victor was purchased and reformulated.

The brands are very similar, and while some dogs who do well on Victor may do okay on Next Level, there are slight differences in the formulas, ingredients, and mineral levels.

Next Level does appear to be a step and repeat of Victor, with eerily similar marketing, ingredients, and formulas.

It’s unclear why the people behind the Next Level brand feel that the market desperately needs a repeat of Victor dog food.

In some ways, their motivation to attempt a repeat of Victor before they sold it feels vindictive and frustrating. It is as if something failed the first time they tried, so they are going at it again with an eerily similar product.

As a pet owner, I’m not convinced I care to be in the middle of that.

    12 4

Does Next Level Pet Food Cause DCM?

Researchers continue to prove that there is a link between unbalanced nutrition and N-DCM, a deadly form of heart disease that is often reversed with diet change.

The problem is that the exact mechanism behind this phenomenon concerning certain pet food formulations is unknown. It largely correlates with foods with peas or legumes in the first five ingredients and with companies that do not have a qualified nutritionist on staff.

Unfortunately, Next Level checks both of those questionable boxes.

If you are at all concerned about nutritional DCM (read more about that HERE), I recommend choosing a WSAVA-compliant food and joining these two groups on Facebook:

Canine Nutrition & Dog Food Discussion

Diet-Associated Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Dogs

Here is an example of a grain-free food from Next Level (Salmon River) that has a concerning ingredients profile when it comes to nutritional DCM:

INGREDIENTS: Menhaden Fish Meal, Peas, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols), Sweet Potato, Pea Protein, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Salmon, Yeast Culture, Blood Meal, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Natural Flavors, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Dried Kelp, Salt.

What Ingredients are Used in Next Level Pet Food

Next Level utilizes some traditional ingredients such as chicken meal and brown rice.

Peas are utilized heavily in many of their formulas, a potential risk factor for nDCM heart disease. If whole peas or several forms of peas are seen in the top 5-10 ingredients, that can be a red flag.

Brown rice is used in many Next Level formulas; it’s worth noting that brown rice is likely to contain higher arsenic levels than white rice or brewer rice. We have to trust that the company is handling this ingredient appropriately and regularly testing for the presence of arsenic in the food.

Like Victor, Next Level uses blood meal to boost protein content. Blood meal is a controversial and non-traditional ingredient in dog food; it’s most commonly used in pig food and fertilizer.

Next Level uses grain sorghum instead of corn. It’s a very similar product to corn, with a similar nutritional profile, but not nearly as much research behind it. Some companies will use sorghum to avoid the negative marketing associated with corn.

“Science is in the Bag” Next Level Tagline

Next Level uses “Science is in the Bag” as a common phrase in their marketing, including as a tagline on each bag itself.

I have many thoughts, but unfortunately, “science” is the new buzzword in pet food marketing.

Any company that uses even the tiniest bit of published clinical research to choose an ingredient can claim to be relying on “science” in their formulations.

This is exactly what Next Level is doing.

When a company tells me that its brand is backed by science, I want to see at least some of the following:

    • Qualified nutritionists on staff (Ph.D. and/or A.C.V.N. Veterinary Nutritionists
    • Verifiable, legitimate Feeding trials
    • Published clinical peer-reviewed research, both in-house and 3rd party, especially related to novel ingredients and formulations sold by the company
    • A dedication to the advancement of animal health and veterinary science
    • Affiliation with the World Small Animal Veterinary Association

Next Level doesn’t do any of those things on the list I’ve seen yet.

Their claims of being “Science-Based” are a disingenuous and egregious use of “Science” for marketing purposes. That is misleading and unfair to consumers.

Is Next Level Good Dog Food?

    I don’t think it’s bad dog food.

Like thousands of other brands, I think it will keep dogs alive. Many dogs will do fine, or even great, on it.

Next Level does cut corners in the nutritionist, research, and feeding trials department, which gives me pause, especially because they are a new company with no established history.

The pets eating Next Level food right now are the guinea pigs.

It will take time for a brand like this to gain my trust, especially in a market with thousands of others to choose from. More established companies have decades of research and science behind their food, which makes it hard to justify giving my hard-earned money to a startup.

Unfortunately, at the moment, we only have a handful of anecdotal reports from pet owners that they are happy with this food. That’s not enough for me to endorse it as a brand.

As a giant-breed dog owner, I am excited to see they’ve developed a product line for giant-breed dogs of all ages. Royal Canin is the only other company to have done this.

I would love to see a company dedicated to giant breed dogs, but they need legitimate science in their back pocket when doing this.

I hope Next Level steps up its game and brings some feeding trials, food-safety certifications, and on-staff, qualified nutritionists to the bar. Until then, I’ll keep them on my radar but won’t be adding them to any recommended brand lists.

  • Big Dogs and Cold Weather: Winter Care Tips

Big Dogs and Cold Weather: Winter Care Tips

I’m sitting here on the day after Christmas, enjoying my coffee and watching my dogs romp around our snowy yard. I love watching my Danes play outside! Winter brings a magical blanket of snow, transforming our surroundings into a frosty wonderland. Big dogs and cold weather require thoughtful care to ensure their comfort and well-being during winter, but that doesn’t mean not ever playing outside!

For our large canine companions, the cold weather can pose some unique challenges. While it’s tempting to believe that dogs can tolerate the cold and ice because “they are animals and not humans”, we should not forget that our big furry babies have acclimated to indoor life.

Our dogs love the warm cozy fireplace, a soft bed, and access to safe, nutritious food.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to navigate the colder months with your gentle giant, without being a fur-mom!

    Big dogs and cold weather

    1. Big Dogs and Cold Weather: Know Your Dog’s Tolerance

Understanding your big dog’s tolerance for cold weather is a solid first step. Dogs, like people, vary in their sensitivity to temperature. Pay close attention to their behavior during outdoor activities. If you notice signs of discomfort such as shivering or attempting to lift their paws off the ground, it’s an indication that they may be too cold.

My terrier Jackson has a very low tolerance for the cold! At night, he sleeps under blankets. When he’s been in the snow I’ve found it helpful to snuggle him to stop the shivers. He loves to wear a hoodie, too!

Some dogs just aren’t built for the cold, and that’s ok! Big dogs with short fur may have a lower tolerance than giant breeds such as the Great Pyrenees.

You aren’t being a “fur mom” if you put your dog with a low cold tolerance into warm cold weather gear.

How Much Time Can a Big Dog Spend in the Snow?

Generally, a good rule of thumb is to limit outdoor exposure to around one hour if your dog tolerates that much.

For dogs, temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) are generally considered cold, and extra precautions, such as providing insulation or protective gear, may be necessary to ensure their comfort and well-being during outdoor activities.

Breeds with thick fur and insulating undercoats can often handle longer periods, while those more sensitive to the cold may benefit from shorter intervals.

We never advocate for leaving dogs out in the cold with no way to escape from it! They must be able to get off of the snow or cold ground and have access to an insulated space.

    18 jpg

    2. Invest in Quality Winter Gear

As temperatures drop, the risk of discomfort, frostbite, and other cold-related issues increases for your canine companion. Adequate gear, such as insulated jackets and booties, protects your dog’s warmth and shields them from harsh elements like freezing temperatures, ice, and salt on pavements.

This investment enhances their physical comfort and contributes to their overall health, allowing for enjoyable outdoor activities without compromising their safety.

    a. Dog Booties

Protect your dog’s paws from the harsh winter elements with durable booties. These are especially helpful if you walk your dog in areas with a lot of ice melt on the sidewalks (which can be harsh or even toxic for them).

Look for options with non-slip soles to prevent slips on icy surfaces. Gradually introduce your dog to wearing booties indoors before venturing outside to help them acclimate.

For dog shoes that fit big paws, we recommend looking into the Ruffwear Polar Trex Dog Boots which can fit a foot that is up to 3.5″ across. This is a luxury option with some solid features (Waterproof upper with a Vibram sole) so plan to spend some dough on these! Please note that Ruffwear sells these only in a 2-pack. If you want boots for all four paws, you’ll need to buy two sets.

For a more budget-friendly choice, consider Mutluks. These waterproof dog boots will fit giant breed paws up to 3.5″ and while still spendy, are less than half the price of the Ruffwear.

The Hipaw dog snow boots come up higher on the leg and fit paws up to 3.5″ in width. They are priced VERY reasonably and have some great features. This brand has mixed reviews but may be a great entry point when it comes to pricing.

I speak from experience in mentioning that a lot of very cheap dog shoes don’t stay on their paws. Take that info as you will when shopping on Amazon. There are a million choices and many of them are a waste of money. Read the reviews and be prepared to invest if you want something that will last more than a season.

    b. Paw Protection Wax

Apply a pet-safe paw wax to create a protective barrier against ice, salt, and cold surfaces. This wax helps prevent dryness, cracking, and irritation, ensuring your dog’s paws stay healthy and comfortable.

Musher’s Secret was created for sled dogs!

    6 4

    c. Insulated Dog Jackets

For big dogs, especially those with short fur or lower body fat, an insulated jacket provides an extra layer of warmth. Always monitor your dog when they are wearing jackets, as some dogs may overheat!

The Ruffwear Powder Hound dog jacket is our top pick for large dogs that are regularly outside playing in the snow. You can find it on Amazon HERE.

We also really like simple dog jackets like this Carhartt Duck Insulated coat that is designed for being out in the cold (but not necessarily the snow).

For chilly winter walks in the neighborhood, a fleece body suit will keep your pup cozy and warm.

    71SeoAdwYBL. AC SL1500 1

    3. Adjust Their Diet

The winter season may require adjustments to your big dog’s diet. Colder temperatures mean they burn more calories to stay warm. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if your dog’s current diet needs modification to meet their increased energy requirements.

We recommend feeding large and giant breed foods, formulated for life stages (puppy, adult, senior) from legacy brands that meet WSAVA recommendations for formulation and manufacturing practices. Purina, Eukanuba, Hill’s, Iams, and Royal Canin are great choices!

    4. Maintain a Regular Exercise Routine

While it might be tempting to stay indoors when temperatures drop, regular exercise is vital for your big dog’s physical and mental well-being. Consider adjusting your walking schedule to the warmer parts of the day and engage in indoor activities to keep them active.

    5. Create a Warm, Cozy Space Indoors

Ensure your big dog has a warm and comfortable spot to rest indoors. Provide soft blankets and consider placing their bed away from drafts. This cozy space becomes a retreat where they can relax and stay warm during the colder nights.

    6. Regular Grooming

Winter grooming is essential for maintaining your dog’s coat health. A clean, mat-free coat provides better insulation against the cold. However, be mindful not to over-bathe, as excessive washing can strip their skin of essential oils, leading to dryness and discomfort.

    7. Watch for Signs of Hypothermia

Keep a close eye on your big dog for signs of hypothermia, such as shivering, lethargy, and weakness. If you observe any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to bring your dog indoors immediately and gradually warm them up. Use blankets and a warm, dry environment to help them recover.

    Conclusion

By taking these winter care tips to heart, you can ensure that your big dog survives and thrives during the colder months. Quality winter gear, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and a warm indoor haven all contribute to a happy and healthy winter season for your gentle giant. Embrace the chilly adventures together, and enjoy the unique joys that winter brings you and your furry friend. Stay warm, stay safe!

  • What I Put On My Dog’s Collar… Safety, Identification, Training, and Location Tracking

    CEL 2242

What I put on my dog’s collar isn’t just a style statement; it’s a full-on toolkit for their safety, ID, training, and even location tracking. Stick around as I spill the tea on what’s hanging around my pups’ necks and why it’s a game-changer.

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #1: Safety

Safety is the most important thing for our dogs, so it is important to me that I keep my dogs safe with the use of their collar.

What you put on your dog’s collar should be a matter of safety

    Safety matters!!!

E-Collar training keeps my dogs safe, so I use an e-collar as their ‘primary’ collar

When it comes to keeping my pups out of trouble, e-collar training is the unsung hero. It’s not just about behavior; it’s a safety net. The seamless integration of e-collar features ensures that my dogs not only learn the ropes but stay out of harm’s way. These e-collar safety features are a game-changer in responsible pet parenting, providing a balance between training and protection.

While going on a standard leash walk, my dogs will wear their regular leash collar as well as their ‘decked out’ e collar. The leash is attached to their regular collar. Never attach a leash to an e collar.

My dogs cannot be safe unless I know where they are! Therefore, I use GPS (Apple Tag) as a digital guardian

Enter the GPS revolution with the Apple AirTag – my digital guardian for those unpredictable adventures. With GPS tracking for pets, I can breathe easy knowing that even if my psycho dogs decide to embark on an impromptu adventure, I can swiftly locate them. This technology isn’t just a convenience; it’s a peace of mind for any dog parent who’s had a moment of panic when their pup went off the grid.

See more later on which air-tag holders I use and which I do NOT recommend using.

Keeping identification on your dog can keep them safe in the long run

Identification is a cornerstone of safety, and my dog’s collar is a walking ID card. With multiple contact numbers on the tags, engraved details, and crucial medical information, it’s like a fail-safe system. Should my adventurous pup find themselves in a tricky situation, anyone who lends a helping hand has all the necessary info to reunite us.

Using the Quick Snap for Emergency Situations

And here’s the ace up my sleeve – the quick snap on the e-collar band. This nifty feature isn’t just about easy on-and-off during training sessions; it’s a potential lifesaver. If my dog ever gets stuck or faces a choking hazard, that quick snap allows me to free them in seconds. It’s a small detail with a big impact, adding an extra layer to the safety dance of responsible dog ownership.

The quick snap collar from e-collar technology looks like this:

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #2: Identification

Identification is an obviously important part of your dog’s collar. I have personally found several lost dogs and the very first thing I do is look for an identification tag so that I can try to get ahold of the dog’s owner! There are several different ways of adding an identification tag onto the dog’s collar and none of these are necessarily ‘right’ or ‘wrong… But, here is what my opinions are!

    good dog gmhfy9 jpg

Always put multiple phone numbers on the dog’s identification tag

Having multiple contact numbers on their tags is a golden rule. It’s like a backup plan – just in case one of us is unreachable, there’s always another lifeline. These dog collar safety features go beyond just looking good; they’re a practical way to make sure someone can reach us if our pups decide to embark on an unplanned adventure.

Jangling or sound proof, do you care if your dog’s identification tag makes noise?

Now, let’s talk about the tag jangle – some pups don’t mind it, while others act like they’re auditioning for a percussion band. It’s all about personal preference. Likewise, some owners don’t seem to mind it, while the ‘jangling’ noise tends to drive me crazy!

If you’re on Team “Silence is Golden,” you might want to consider a soundproof tag. Balancing stylish and functional dog collars means taking into account the little details that make a big difference in your pup’s comfort and your sanity.

    The worst ‘soundproof’ tag

Getting a tag for your dog that is soundproof is useless if that said tag breaks within 1 day. Then you really won’t be able to hear it! These are the ‘soundproof’ dog collar tags that I have personally tried and found useless because they break off within a few weeks and I never see them again.

    DO NOT BUY THESE TAGS!!!

    The best ‘soundproof’ tag

The best soundproof tag I have ever used, and the one I personally use, is made from metal and not sillicone. Maybe your dogs do not wrestle or roughhouse, but the second mine do the sillicone ones fall off. So, I look for a tag that does NOT hang, but also will NOT break. This tag has never fallen off and always remains secure around my e collar band.

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY BUY THIS TAG! (SHOP HERE)

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Put medical information on your dog’s tag, if they need medicine or have any conditions

For those extra layers of safety, tossing in some medical information on the tag is a smart move. If your furball has any special needs or conditions, having it right there on the collar is like a note to anyone who lends a helping hand. It’s one of those dog collar identification tips that can make all the difference in a crucial moment.

Put a return address on your dog’s collar – home sweet home

And of course, let’s not forget the good old return address. If our mischievous pals decide to go on a solo mission, having an address on their collar ensures they find their way back home. It’s not just about safety; it’s about peace of mind, knowing that if they get lost, someone kind will guide them back to us.

What I Put On My Dog’s Collar Priority #3: Training

Being able to train my dogs and communicate with them with the use of their collar is huge. Their collar is not just ‘dead-weight’ but its actually a tool that we can use to bond and grow closer in our relationship. They get to explore the world because of the tools on their collar!

Curious about the wizardry behind the scenes?

I pair that chic Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar with the EZ-904 2T 4-Dog Easy Educator. Four dogs might sound like chaos, but with this setup, it’s a breeze.

It’s for peace of mind but also hugely important for that ‘what if’ of them getting lost or you losing track of them momentarily. Let’s chat about GPS tracking and how it might just be the game-changer we didn’t know we needed for our chaos-makers. I have tried MANY and have also LOST many…. so I know the pain.

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Using an Apple AirTag to Track My Dogs Location

There are hundreds (probably) of fancy tracking devices out there for our dogs, but my favorite is the Apple Airtag. (call me boring!)

When it comes to ensuring the safety and whereabouts of my off-leash adventurers, the Apple AirTag emerges as a cornerstone of dog collar safety features. The airtag does not faulty in its ability to track my dogs, and it works basically the exact same as the fancy expensive ones that require a subscription, although it does NOT do the fun/fancy thingsl ike track their health/sleep, steps.

Functioning like a digital leash, this ingenious device provides the peace of mind that, even in their wanderlust moments, I can effortlessly track down my pups with just a few taps on my phone.

Plus, air-tags are pretty affordable. They are about $90 for 4 of them and you don’t have to have a subscription. You can look at the listing on amazon here:

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

Major downside of using an apple air-tag: I lose them all the time

One major downside of using an apple airtag to help me not lose my dogs is… well, I lose my apple airtags. My dogs play hard and I noticed the airtag holders continually fell off, broke, and we’d lose the airtags. Although you may be asking ‘why can’t you just track the airtag and go find it?’… We did! However, in open fields with tall grass, the airtag would be leading me to the general location of my DOG but it can be tough to trace down a tiny airtag. Also, the airtags DO die after awhile. Once, someone also STOLE a lost airtag of mine (so that was fun)…

In other words, if you are using an apple airtag, take it from me, and do NOT buy the following airtag-holders because they will break and fall off of your dog’s collar and you may never recover them.

Do not use the following airtag holders – they will break!!!

YES… Do buy this airtag holder – it WORKS!

This is the airtag holder that I DO recommend! And the ONLY one!!! Enter the IPX8 Waterproof AirTag Dog Collar Holder – the unsung hero of AirTag security for pets.

This ultra-durable accessory not only fits snugly on all widths of collars but also comes in a convenient 4-pack. (Well, for us crazy people who have 4 dogs)

Seamlessly attaching to the e-collar band is easy because the e collar bands have pre-made holes for easy installation. And better than that, you won’t lose it and have to buy new holders/air-tags every few weeks/months. You can find it here.

What I Put On My Dog's Collar

What I Put On My Dogs Collar – Summary

In a nutshell, what I put on my dogs’ collars goes beyond just a simple collar. I have the band from e-collar tech, the device from e-collar tech, a soundproof and reliable form of identification, the apple airtag with the reliable means of holding it (which won’t fall off) and have thought through the inclusion of safety features like the quick snap on the e-collar band ensures swift removal in potential choking hazards.

While GPS tracking, notably through the Apple AirTag, provides an extra layer of security for off-leash adventures, the identification game is strong with multiple contact numbers, medical information, and a return address on their tags.

Training is a breeze with the easy-on, easy-off design of the 3/4″ Quick Snap Mini Bungee Collar, coupled with the convenience of color-coded remote control for multiple dogs. Finally, the waterproof and secure IPX8 AirTag holder takes the worry out of losing tags during aquatic escapades. It’s a comprehensive approach, blending style and functionality for a well-rounded canine care strategy.

  • Furbo 360 Dog Camera Review

    Furbo 360 Dog Camera Review

Today I’m giving my unbiased Furbo 360 dog camera review, but first, a personal story.

Ihave a Great Dane with a bit of separation anxiety, and was kind of at my wits end. Everytime I left the house, he was howling. How did I know about this? My NEIGHBORS had to tell me. How embarrassing.

In a state of panic (after hearing that a petsitter had left him alone for 8 hours and he cried the whole time) I purchased the Furbo 360 Dog Camera on Amazon.

Having now used it for 2 months, I feel that I can create an honest Furbo review for you! There are some pros and cons to the Furbo, but overall, YES this is a great product. Let’s dig into the specifics.

    Furbo 360 dog camera review

Furbo 360 Dog Camera Review Summary

Here is a short list of the pros and cons of the Furbo 360 camera for separation anxiety.

    PROS

    • 360 rotation. This camera spins all the way around and WILL track your pets movement for you!
    • Robust app; the app tracks movement, provides you with alerts, and allows you to see your pet anytime you want
    • Cloud: view activity from the whole day
    • Activity labels: the app knows what your pet is doing (barking, chewing, running, crying, etc.) and labels the activity
    • Pet selfies! If your pet approaches the camera, it sends you adorable photos.
    • Treat tossing; you can use the app to throw treats at your pet anytime you want, even if you are miles away!
    • Good camera quality; I never feel that the resolution is poor
    • The pets know it gives them treats, so they love it

    CONS

    • Sometimes the treats get stuck and the tossing function jams up (more on this below, you have to pick the right kind of treats for the Furbo!)
    • A curious or tenacious pet could easily open it and take all of the treats out
    • The microphone function (talk to your pet 2-way audio) is a bit noisy and doesn’t always sound nice
    • Monthly fee (you have to pay to use the app, which is what makes the Furbo functional)

As you can see, my CONS list for the Furbo 360 Dog Camera is much shorter.

Does the Furbo 360 Help With Separation Anxiety?

Remember how I told you about my howling Great Dane? I know my neighbors were not appreciative at all…and I hated knowing that he was in distress.

I can say that the Furbo 360 DOES help with separation anxiety for two reasons:

    • The treat tossing function is pretty helpful for redirecting a dog that may be in distress (it whistles before it chucks the treat, so the dog learns to make that association). Pro tip be careful not to reward distressed behavior with treats! Instead, wait for the moment your pup settles then trigger the treat release.
    • Being able to see my dog on the Furbo gives me valuable insight into not only his triggers, but how our habits affected him when we were away.

Separation anxiety is a complex behavior that is rooted in insecurity. Even the most confident dogs can whine, cry, pace, and chew when their owner isn’t home.

So while the Furbo dog camera does help with separation anxiety, it’s just one (VERY helpful) piece of the puzzle.

Can I use the Furbo Dog Camera without the App?

Even if you could, I have to tell you that the app is WELL worth it.

Here are some of my favorite features of the Furbo Camera App:

    • Real time notifications of behaviors, which are labelled and include crying, barking, continuous barking, chewing, running, and more
    • Live monitoring at any time, with full control of camera rotation so you can find your dog in the room
    • Did I mention pet selfies? These are automatically sent to you anytime your dog approaches the camera
    • Treat tossing (you cannot do this without the app, and it’s a big thing that sets the Furbo apart from other dog monitoring cameras
    • Home emergency alert; the camera will notify you if there appears to be an emergency of any kind, including smoke
    • Human alert; the app lets you know if a human is in the room. This can be helpful for monitoring petsitter activity, or activity of bad people who don’t belong in your home!

To be honest, I have no clue if you can even try to use the Furbo without the app subscription. From what I’ve seen online, it’s actually cheaper to buy the camera if you commit to the app anyways. That’s a win-win in my book!

    Does Furbo Treat Tossing Work?

I love watching my dogs on camera when I use the treat tossing function. It’s HILARIOUS. The dogs hear the whistle and come running. I can trigger the Furbo to throw a treat anytime, anywhere I am in the world that my cell phone has internet, too!

It takes a few seconds from the time the Furbo makes a whistle sound until the treat actually launches from the device. The dogs have learned that’s how it works and they often sit with their head tilted staring at it.

To say I’ve had many, MANY laughs watching my dogs on this camera is an understatement! Sometimes if they want a treat they walk up and stare at it with hope. The camera tracks this movement and sends me a selfie, which is always adorable.

The treat tosser can get jammed if you use the wrong kind of treats! I made this mistake at first and used a softer, larger treat. It did not damage the machine but I had to do some creative work to get them out.

Furbo recommends small, hard treats like THESE from Plato

    Furbo Review

    Is the Furbo Always Recording?

The Furbo is always ready to pick up on activity, but it is not always recording.

If you are home, you can turn off the tracking. You can even set a schedule (for example, the Furbo will automatically turn on and start tracking when you leave for work).

I’m usually too lazy to go into the app to turn off tracking and motion sensing when we are home, so ours is on all of the time. It regularly lets me know if my dogs are barking, which is funny because I’m often in the same room.

The app only stores videos for 24 hours. After that, they are removed from both the app AND the cloud, which gives me peace of mind when it comes to data security of videos in my home.

    Is Furbo Worth It?

There are a million pet camera options out there, and to be honest the only two that I have experience with are the Ring Camera System and the Furbo.

The Ring doesn’t rotate, doesn’t track movement, and doesn’t toss treats.

So in my book, the Furbo wins hands down.

As to the other treat chucking dog cameras on the market? I have no idea. Amazon is overloaded with choices, many of them cheaper. To that, I say this: app development and security (of videos taken in the home and stored on the cloud) are not cheap. Bad apps ruin good products all the time, and I personally would not take my chances on a budget knockoff version of something like this.

We know the Furbo app is secure and it works beautifully. Having now used the Furbo 360 in my home for a few months, I can say with confidence that it is a well made product that just…WORKS.

I’ve never had problems with the connection, the camera, or the treat tossing function (ok, except when I was an idiot and put soft treats in there). The wooden lid is a nice feature that helps the device blend in with home decor.

  • Is My Dog in Pain? My Experience with Wobblers Syndrome

Is My Dog in Pain? My Experience with Wobblers Syndrome

Is my dog in pain? This is one nagging question that I have asked myself ever since Gigi, my Great Dane, was diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome on her third birthday last year. Wobblers Syndrome, also known as cervical spondylomyelopathy or cervical vertebral instability, is a condition that affects the spine of dogs, particularly large breeds like Great Danes, Doberman Pinschers, and Mastiffs. It can lead to various neurological issues, including pain and difficulty moving.

Lets discuss the things that I have done to help make sure she lives a comfortable life, despite having a chronic condition.

What is Wobblers and Is My Dog in Pain?

Wobblers Syndrome is a complex condition that primarily affects the cervical (neck) region of a dog’s spine. It’s characterized by the compression or instability of the spinal cord due to abnormalities in the vertebrae. These abnormalities can cause pain, weakness, and difficulties with coordination in affected dogs.

If your dog has been diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome, it’s essential to monitor their condition closely for signs of pain. Some common indicators of pain in dogs with Wobblers include:

    1. Lameness or difficulty walking: Dogs with Wobblers may exhibit a wobbly or unsteady gait, hence the name of the syndrome.
    2. Neck pain: They may be sensitive or painful when you touch their neck or head.
    3. Reluctance to move: Dogs in pain often avoid moving or may be hesitant to go up or down stairs or jump onto furniture.
    4. Changes in behavior: Look for signs of restlessness, aggression, or depression, which can be indications of pain.
    5. Loss of appetite: Pain can reduce a dog’s appetite, leading to weight loss.
    6. Whining or vocalization: Dogs may vocalize or whine when they are in pain.

How Can I Help Make Sure My Dog Is Not in Pain?

If your dog has Wobblers Syndrome or any other chronic condition, there are several ways you can help ensure they are comfortable and pain-free. Here are some key areas to focus on. I have now had a neurological / special needs dog for 1.5 years, and these are the main things that have worked for us!

Make Lifestyle Changes and Implement Them All the Time!

Your lifestyle matters when you have any dog, but even more so when you have a dog who may experience daily pain or discomfort.

Be prepared to make necessary adjustments to your home, routine, and activities to accommodate your dog’s needs. Providing a loving and supportive environment, along with the appropriate medical care and therapies, will not only help alleviate their pain but also allow you to cherish the precious moments you share with your loyal and resilient friend. Remember, the bond you share with your dog can grow stronger through these challenges, making every effort you invest in their well-being well worth it.

    Lifestyle Tips:

    • Nail Maintenance: Keep your dog’s nails trimmed to prevent them from dragging their paws, which can exacerbate pain.
    • Car Ramps: Use ramps to help your dog get in and out of the car or on and off elevated surfaces with ease.
    • Exercise: Work with your veterinarian to develop an appropriate exercise plan that keeps your dog active without putting too much strain on their spine.
    • Rugs: It can be very difficult for a dog to walk on slippery floors, so laying rugs down helps them tremendously!

What Kind of Floors Are Best for Dogs?

Focus on Nutrition! Nutrition Can Fuel Your Pup!

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in managing the well-being of a dog with Wobblers Syndrome.

Choosing the right diet is essential to ensure your canine companion receives the necessary nutrients to support their overall health and minimize discomfort. Consider adding supplements like Omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine to promote joint health and reduce inflammation.

Opt for a high-quality diet specially formulated for large breed dogs, as their nutritional needs may differ from smaller breeds. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend a specialized diet tailored to your dog’s specific condition. Proper nutrition not only contributes to your dog’s physical health but also plays a role in their mental and emotional well-being, helping them lead a more comfortable and fulfilling life despite the challenges posed by Wobblers Syndrome.

What should you feed your Great Dane?

    Nutritional Tips:

    • Omega E and Glucosamine: Consider supplements like Omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine, which can support joint health and reduce inflammation.
    • High-Quality Diet: Feed your dog a high-quality diet formulated for large breed dogs. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations.
    • Veterinarian-Approved Diet: In some cases, a specialized diet prescribed by your vet may be necessary to manage your dog’s condition effectively.

    Medication Is Not Always Bad

Medicating your beloved dog can indeed be a daunting decision, often accompanied by worries about side effects or long-term consequences.

However, for dogs dealing with chronic pain, medication can be a true blessing in disguise. It’s essential to recognize that many veterinary medications have been thoroughly researched and are carefully administered to provide relief while minimizing adverse effects. These treatments can significantly enhance your dog’s quality of life by alleviating discomfort, improving mobility, and even preventing further damage or deterioration. Consulting with a trusted veterinarian who specializes in your dog’s condition can help ease your concerns and guide you toward the most suitable medication options, ultimately allowing your furry friend to enjoy a more comfortable and pain-free existence. In many cases, medication can be the key to unlocking a happier and healthier life for your canine companion.

    Joint Health Tips

    Medications Tips:

    • Finding a Veterinarian You Love: Establish a strong relationship with a veterinarian who specializes in treating dogs with neurological issues.
    • Trusting the Experts: Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for medications that can help manage pain and inflammation.
    • Using Prescription Medication: In severe cases, prescription medications may be necessary to alleviate your dog’s pain.

Use CBD to Help Provide Comfort and Ease Discomfort

CBD (Cannabidiol) has gained considerable attention in recent years as a potential aid in managing pain and discomfort in dogs, including those with chronic conditions like Wobblers Syndrome. Derived from the cannabis plant, CBD is non-psychoactive and known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. We have very positive results when using CBD products designed specifically for dogs for Gigi’s plan to keep her happy.

These products, such as those from reputable brands like Pet Releaf, can help reduce discomfort, inflammation, and anxiety in dogs, ultimately improving their quality of life. When used responsibly and under professional guidance, CBD can be a valuable addition to your dog’s pain management strategy.

Modern-Day Therapies That We Have Done That Help

Modern-day therapies have played a significant role in improving the comfort and well-being of Gigi, as well as some others who are dealing with conditions like Wobblers Syndrome.

Acupuncture, a traditional practice adapted for pets, has shown promise in managing pain and enhancing overall health. Laser therapy offers a non-invasive approach to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain, while veterinary chiropractors can address mobility issues, providing much-needed relief. Embracing new and innovative treatments, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, showcases the commitment to exploring every avenue to enhance your dog’s quality of life. These modern therapies, when integrated into a comprehensive care plan, can make a remarkable difference in the comfort and happiness of dogs living with chronic pain.

Making the Most Out of Every Moment

Living with a dog diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome can be challenging, but it’s important to focus on making the most out of every moment you have together. Spend quality time with your dog, engage in activities they enjoy, and ensure they receive plenty of love and attention. Regular check-ups with your veterinarian are crucial to monitor their condition and make adjustments to their treatment plan as needed.

As an influencer, blogger, and devoted dog lover, I’ve always believed in using my platform to make a positive impact on the world, especially when it comes to innocent dogs.

Dogs hold a special place in my heart, and I’ve made it my mission to contribute to their betterment in any way I can. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to team up with Jolly Pets, a brand known for its dedication to creating durable and enjoyable dog toys. Together, we embarked on a heartwarming journey to bring joy to the dogs at the Denver Animal Shelter.

Jolly Pets: A Commitment to Quality and Fun

Jolly Pets has long been a name synonymous with high-quality and durable dog toys. Their commitment to creating products that enrich pets’ lives aligns perfectly with my own values.

Founded in 1994 as a subsidiary of Horsemen’s Pride, Inc., Jolly Pets started its journey with the iconic Jolly Ball for equine use. The success of this product paved the way for their expansion into the world of canine companions, and their focus on durability and creativity made them a go-to brand for dog lovers everywhere.

    Making Shelter Dogs Happy

What truly sets Jolly Pets apart is their dedication to innovation and quality. Each product is designed with your dog’s well-being in mind, promising not just a toy, but a tool for enrichment. From durable balls that withstand endless play to engaging puzzles that challenge your pup’s mind, Jolly Pets has consistently delivered on their promise to enhance the lives of our four-legged friends.

Denver Animal Shelter: A Haven for Lost and Abandoned Pets

The Denver Animal Shelter stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of lost and abandoned pets each year. Their mission aligns with mine – to protect, care for, and advocate for animals in need. By providing humane care, reuniting lost pets with their families, facilitating adoptions, and enforcing animal ordinances, they play a crucial role in creating a better future for Denver’s animals and residents.

Making a Difference: My Time as a Volunteer at the Denver Animal Shelter

My journey as a volunteer at the Denver Animal Shelter has been a profoundly rewarding experience that has touched my heart in ways I could never have imagined.

Stepping into the shelter, I found myself immersed in a world of compassion, resilience, and hope.

One dog stares out of her temporary home at the animal shelter and looks at me with sweet eyes.

Each day spent working alongside the dedicated shelter staff and interacting with the incredible dogs has reinforced my belief in the power of small acts of kindness to make a significant impact.

Whether it’s walking dogs, cleaning up the dogs or their cages, or simply spending time offering comfort and companionship, every moment spent as a volunteer has deepened my connection to the cause and strengthened my commitment to being a voice for the voiceless.

Through this experience, I’ve come to understand that volunteering is not just about giving time – it’s about sharing love, making connections, and being a part of a community that is dedicated to creating a brighter future for every animal that enters the shelter’s doors.

Jolly Pets Toys: Get To Know Each of Our Favs

Jolly Pets has a variety of toys that are known for being indestructible and great for chewers. Although there are quite a few toys, I’m just gonna tell you about our (well my dogs) favorites.

    The Tug-n-Toss

Imagine this: you give it a good toss, and boom! It’s off, soaring through the air like a furry missile. The coolest part? You don’t need to fumble with any inflation nonsense – it’s all set to create a whirlwind of excitement both on the ground and in the water. And oh, did I mention the handle? It’s not just for looks – it makes the retrieval game a total cakewalk, even when your four-legged buddy insists on holding onto it with all their might.

And guess what, it’s proudly made right here in the good ol’ USA! When it comes to the chase, trust me, the Tug-n-Toss doesn’t mess around. It’s like a personal trainer for your dog, giving them a workout that’ll have them snoozing in no time. But hey, it’s not just about running – this bad boy is perfect for water play too.

And here’s the cherry on top – it’s scented! The Light Blue one smells like a basket of blueberries, and the Orange? Well, it’s like a mini-vanilla heaven. But hey, let’s remember, no toy is totally indestructible. While we design these to last, always keep an eye out when your furball is having a blast. And if anything starts looking wonky, loose, or vanishes altogether, it’s time to give that toy a respectful send-off. Safety first, right!

    The Romp n Roll

This toy is kind of like the MVP of your pup’s playtime, a true jack-of-all-trades.

Seriously, it’s like the Swiss Army knife of dog toys. Want to give it a good kick? Go for it. Feel like a game of tug-of-war? It’s your pup’s new partner in crime. Throwing, carrying, launching – this ball is up for it all. But wait, there’s more – it floats, even if your pup gets a little overenthusiastic and gives it a puncture. How cool is that?

You can also play with this one in the water too, which my pups LOVE!

It’s like a superhero for your pet’s tummy!

This fantastic supplement also aids in soothing upset stomachs, providing much-needed comfort to our furry friends during times of digestive distress. Plus, it even helps address those pesky anal gland issues that can cause discomfort for our pets.

    Organic Ingredients

I appreciate that Pumpkin Plus is made with organic ingredients, giving me peace of mind knowing I’m giving my pet a natural and safe solution. It’s evident that the makers of Pumpkin Plus have put careful thought into crafting a supplement that addresses the specific needs of our pets’ digestive health.

In the supplement above, called Fera Pet Pumpkin Fiber Supplement, you can see that pumpkin is the primary ingredient! Not only that, it is organic and includes pumpkin seeds, which will provide additional fiber and vitamins.

    Organic Gum Arabic

Next, you notice that the powder includes Organic Gum Arabic. “Acacia gum is a texturing and water-retention agent, a natural source of fiber, and a processing aid in pet food.” So, Organic Gum Arabic is a safe processing aid that also helps to add a bit of fiber!

    Organic Coconut

The next ingredient is organic coconut!  “Coconut is packed with antioxidants to support the immune system. It also helps the body form a healthy response to foreign microbes. This means coconut provides the body with an extra defense against bad bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi.” (The AKC)

    Organic Flax Seed

Flaxseed, a superfood for both humans and animals, is an excellent addition to your furry friend’s diet! This tiny seed is packed with essential nutrients that aid in maintaining your dog’s overall health and well-being. In addition to providing much-needed nourishment, flaxseed has been known to help promote luscious, shiny hair coats in dogs, leaving their skin healthy and supple.

One of the primary reasons for adding flaxseed to your dog’s diet is because it contains a plethora of vital nutrients, including high amounts of omega fatty acids. These fatty acids, particularly omega-6 fatty acid (also known as Linoleic Acid), are essential for supporting various functions in your dog’s body, including cognitive health, immune function, and healthy skin and coat. By incorporating flaxseed into your dog’s diet, you’re providing them with a range of crucial nutrients that will keep them feeling and looking their very best!

    Organic Apple Fiber

Including apple fiber as an additional ingredient in your dog’s pumpkin supplement can offer several notable benefits to their overall health and well-being. Apple fiber is rich in soluble and insoluble fibers, which can help support your dog’s digestive system. The soluble fibers aid in maintaining healthy bowel movements and can alleviate constipation or diarrhea by regulating the absorption of water in the digestive tract. On the other hand, insoluble fibers add bulk to the stool, promoting regularity and preventing digestive issues like constipation.

    Organic Inulin (Jerusalem Artichoke)

Jerusalem artichokes contain copious amounts of both soluble and insoluble fiber, making the veggie wonderful for your pup’s digestion. This root veggie is not high in vitamins but has a moderate amount of minerals like potassium and iron.

    Organic Ginger Root

Ginger has been known as a digestive aid for many years and has been proven to help with stomach upset and nausea.

The potential benefits of ginger do not end there, however, as it has been discovered to have various health benefits that extend beyond digestive health.

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in antioxidants that can help eliminate free radicals in the body, improve heart health, and even prevent cancer for your dog.

Believe it or not, many Great Danes actually love the water, and some even swim! Others enjoy boating and paddle boards, too.

Author’s note: it is important to monitor your dogs activity in and around water. Your dogs safety rests in your hands whether they have a lifejacket on or not.

The Best Lifejackets for Great Danes

A good lifejacket for your dog should be:

    • Affordable
    • Well-made
    • Adjustable
    • GIANT!

Dog life jackets come in a range of sizes and are most widely available for medium-average sized dogs. They also come in a range of different qualities.

Every lifejacket offers different floatation ability, too. Some life jackets are better suited to dogs that are strong, athletic swimmers.

Less expensive options are perfect for Great Dane owners who won’t be using the jacket often, as the lower quality fabrics and stitching may reduce the useful lifespan of the product.

It’s important to note as well that cheaper lifejackets also won’t have as nice of a fit; in general they tend to be fairly boxy and utilitarian vs. athletic and comfortable to wear. For very active and athletic dogs who will be in the water or boating often, we recommend spending a little bit more.

Why the Color of your Dog’s Lifejacket Matters

Make sure to choose BRIGHT colors! Remember that blue and green tones can get lost in the water, so if your dog is struggling or runs off, it’s less likely you’ll be able to see them.

We recommend choosing bright or neon colors such as orange, pink, lime, coral, and yellow.

Camo colors are best suited for highly trained retriever type hunting dogs, and shouldn’t be used as a fashion statement. Because camouflage is designed to make it harder (not easier) to find and see your dog, it’s not a very practical or safe choice for your average pet Dane.

Best Inexpensive Option: Yoyaker Dog Life Jacket

The Yoyaker Dog Life Jacket is a good option for Dane owners who aren’t in the water often. It is unlikely to hold up well to repeated use, but for a day in the sun? Start here! We don’t recommend a cheap life jacket like this for active dogs that will be in the water often.

This affordable choice comes in a range of colors and is one of the larger options we found! It is adjustable up to 48.5″ around the chest. (For perspective, my average sized intact male Great Dane has a chest circumference of 38″).

This is not a lifejacket with a very athletic fit, so on hot days it will be even more important to monitor your dogs body temperature and comfort.

These are good for all but especially great for Danes who are already fairly confident in and around water. Best Pet Store Life Jacket for Great Danes

Of course, it’s really nice if we can get a lifejacket for our dogs locally and make sure it fits before purchase. Some pet stores carry lifejackets (typically, it’s seasonal) and you can go in with your dog to test it out.

For that, we highly recommend visiting Petsmart and checkout out the Outward Hound Dawson swim jacket. This version brings athletics to good floatation and comfort and can be adjusted to fit up to a 44″ chest.

Best Overall Life Jacket for Great Danes

There is one top choice that is wildly popular among dog owners and organizations that support water sports and boating.

The Ruffwear Float Coat is one of the most well-designed and highly rated floatation devices for dogs!

Unlike other life jackets, the buckles are mostly hidden. This greatly reduces the risk that your dog become caught on something while in the water. The Ruffwear Float Coat is well-made, comes in beautiful colors, and will fit a dog with a chest circumference of up to 42″.

How to Make Sure a LifeJacket Fits a Dog

Once you’ve found a life jacket for your dog that you love, it’s important to make sure that the fit is correct.

If you are at the tail end of the straps and the jacket is snug, find a bigger jacket.

If you cinch the straps all the way down and the jacket is loose, go down a size.

An ill-fitting life jack is dangerous; it is important that the jacket fits nicely on your dogs body, is comfortable for them to wear, and doesn’t ride up if they are floating in the water. Go for a snug but comfortable fit (don’t cut off circulation, please).

We recommend checking buckles and fit often, and adjusting as needed throughout the day. At no point should the jacket be so loose that it wiggles around as the dog moves; this can cause rubbing or chafing and will not support your dog in the water, either.

    Do Great Danes Like Water?

    Yes!

Many Great Danes actually love the water, choosing to splash, splay, and even swim in it.

In general, positive exposure to water in puppyhood goes a long ways towards building confidence in lakes and oceans. Something as simple as a small kiddle pool in your backyard can be used to help your puppy develop an early love for having their paws and fur wet!

How to Keep Your Great Dane Safe in the Water

Spending the day at the lake or the ocean should be fun and safe, not stressful and dangerous!

If your dog is new to swimming, stay by their side and be encouraging!

For pet owners who want to take their Great Dane paddle boarding or on a boat, a little advanced preparation is recommended!

Please check the weight limits if your paddleboard, boat, or kayak before loading yourself, your Dane, and all your gear on board.

    • Introduce the watercraft early! Ideally, your dog will have interacted with these things as a puppy. If not, that’s ok, it’s never too late!
    • For dogs of all ages, you can put your personal watercraft (paddle board, etc.) on the lawn and play games getting on and off. Make this a positive experience and then repeat it again on the shore before going on the water.
    • For large boats, the same thing applies! Introduce getting on and off, and make it a positive experience.
    • Once you are on the water, make sure your dog is in their life jacket and ideally off-leash with a modern sport e-collar (long lines can be dangerous in this situation, but check your local leash laws as well, and NEVER let a dog off leash that doesn’t have perfect recall)
    • Take it easy and have fun! If your dog is shaking, panting, drooling, or panicking, it’s not a safe activity.

Paddle boarding with a dog or spending the day on the lake in a boat is a fun activity, but do not do it if your dog really doesn’t like it!

I participate in water sports with my dogs and it makes me so sad to see how many dogs on the water are flat out terrified to be there. Many dog owners seem oblivious to it, unfortunately. Cue into your dogs body language; it’s ok to encourage them to face their fears a little bit, but if they are tense or freaking out? It’s time for a change in plans.

Water Ingestion & Inhalation in Dogs Swimming

Another danger to watch out for in the water is excess consumption or inhalation of water, dirt, and mud.

Not only can your dog pick up parasites this way, but they are at risk of a belly ache or worse, getting water in their lungs.

Inhaling water is dangerous to your dog and it can result from gulping, guzzling, or struggling in the water in some way. If your dog has any kind of near drowning event, we recommend seeing a veterinarian ASAP.

Near drowning can happen to even the strongest of swimmers! In the ocean, the current can easily sweep them away. Some dogs don’t realize their limit and end up to far out in the water but become too tired to swim back.

Just like humans, a dog that is struggling in the water may appear to be ‘climbing a ladder’. A dog in this situation needs immediate rescue and help, even if they are wearing a lifejacket!

Monitor your dogs activity in and around the water, and make sure they are not gulping, guzzling, or inhaling too much.

    Blue-Green Algae: Dangerous Water

During warm summer months, blue green algae blooms on stagnant lakes and ponds.

Blue-green algae is extremely toxic and kills many dogs each year after they spend an afternoon swimming.

Symptoms of blue-green algae exposure in dogs include:

    • Panting
    • Drooling
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Seizures
    • Respiratory Distress
    • Acting disoriented or wobbly

These symptoms or any known exposure to toxic algae in the water require immediate veterinary care. Left untreated, many dogs experience liver failure and death quickly.

The unfortunate thing about blue-green algae is that at times, it may not be visible. Spores from a nearby (visible) bloom can travel into clean waters. Thankfully, the worst waters typically have active and visible blue-green blooms that warn you to stay away.

It is very important when taking your dog swimming during the summer that you only engage in known safe waters and waters that are regularly tested for algae by your local wildlife and conservation officials. Never swim or engage in water activities where you see an active bloom nearby, and monitor reports from your States park systems and other dog owners.

Here is an exceptional article on how to spot toxic blooms. It shows photos so you can see the difference between a very typical non-toxic green algae and plants, and the dangerous blue-green film and signs of dangerous water (including smells) to watch for.

Not only is blue-green algae a danger, but there are all kinds of parasites that want to feed off your pet. They are easily picked up in wooded natural areas and near water, so learn how to protect your pet from parasites HERE.

    Off-Leash Training for Great Danes

I mentioned this above, but it’s important to remember that long lines can be dangerous for dogs while they are swimming or trying to play and run freely.

However, being off-leash is dangerous (and in some places illegal) if your dog is not both well trained AND has a backup device such as a modern e-collar.

Any Great Dane that is out in public near other people or dogs needs to be well trained, especially if they are to be off-leash.

We recommend e-collar training, which is a modern, gentle way to replace the long leash and give your dog more freedom.

Proper e-collar training starts with a lot of positive reinforcement and requires that you purchase a quality electric dog collar, not a cheap shock collar from Amazon. Shock collars are not appropriate for Great Danes and are considered inhumane.

E-Collars don’t use shock, they use muscle stimulation (a tactile sensation like touch) which, with training, your dog learns to associate with certain behaviors. This allows you to communicate from afar and keep your dog safe in the water, too.
